Religious leaders denounce Spiritual Fitness Test (about time!)

The Pasadena Sun has a great collection of various religious leaders' thoughts on the mandatory Spiritual Fitness testing and training in the US Military. Rev. Skip Lindeman - United Church of Christ: ... Think about it: A guy takes the test and gets all A-grades on spirituality, and then says, “Gimme a gun so I can go kill as many of the enemy as I can!” Is that what a spiritual person does? How can anybody be spiritual, and then go blow another human being (i. e., child of God, made … [Read more...]

Kick-ass atheist student group raised funds for disabled veterans

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro campus has a very active Atheists group. UNCG- Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics are a chapter of the Secular Student Alliance, so it's not surprising to hear that they are up to some meaningful activism. They have attracted some veterans of their own, and decided to actually do something meaningful on Veteran's Day. Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor our servicemen and women who have fought for our right to organize apart from religion.  So … [Read more...]

Glenwood Elementary admits mistake, apologizes for “I love Jesus because…”

American Atheists is proud to announce that Glenwood Elementary in the McDowell County (NC) School District, has apologized for the unconstitutional "I love Jesus because ___" controversy. An article I wrote here on FtB last week sounded the alert, and the secular internet community reacted strongly. Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media support is often crucial to our success at American Atheists (I'm the Military Director at American Atheists). Here are the results, for … [Read more...]

A controversial effort to spread Christianity across international borders might soon be stopped at Glenwood Elementary, a public school in McDowell County, North Carolina. Soon after the story got out last Thusday, secular activists began contacting officials in McDowell County. American Atheists has obtained a copy of the form that all students at Glenwood Elementary had to fill out. This is part of Operation Christmas Child, an effort by the Billy Graham Evangelistic … [Read more...]

Public elementary school asks students “I love Jesus because ___”

An anonymous resident of a small town in western North Carolina wrote in with a disturbing bit of news. I wanted to share something with my fellow atheists. I work at an elementary school as an assistant in a small town in western NC. Our school is participating in operation christmas where they send kids in third world countries a box of things they need (school supplies, toothbrushes, etc.) and I am more than excited to help out the less fortunate. My niece also goes to this school and her … [Read more...]

Outspoken Florida Atheist EllenBeth Wachs faces multiple ‘revenge arrests’

It is much more difficult to stand up for a 'hard right' than to just accept an 'easy wrong'. Please spare 5 minutes for a brave atheist who has been arrested multiple times for standing up for what is right. All you need to do is sign this petition (and if you have the scratch, donate here). And no, signing this petition is not just a symbolic exercise or a waste of time. The website where the petition is hosted automatically generates email messages to several high-profile government … [Read more...]

Bastrop School Knowingly Breaks Laws and Promises About Prayer

Yesterday, we brought you Damon Fowler's struggle to stop the school's prayer at his graduation. He threatened to go to the ACLU, so they actually backed down. Then staff members at this school started saying extremely upsetting things about him in the town's newspapers. They were mad that a person dared to call them out on decades old constitutionally settled law. Several of us passed along his request for people to write to the school, and I added a link to the newspaper in Bastrop. You guys … [Read more...]

Courageous High School Atheist Needs 5 Minutes Of Your Time

Rock Beyond Belief has a busy weekend planned (with that exciting 24 hour telethon that you are going to watch). However, I really want to shift gears for a second. This is from reddit: My graduation from high school is this Friday. I live in the Bible Belt of the United States. The school was going to perform a prayer at graduation, but due to me sending the superintendent an email stating it was against Louisiana state law and that I would be forced to contact the ACLU if they ignored me, … [Read more...]

Rep. George Cleveland is not a witch

But he does remind me of someone who used to dabble in witchcraft. [But not anymore.] Many of our supporters have been signing a petition on our behalf. The petition at change.org actually sends mail directly to your representatives based on the street address you type in, with a pre-formatted message explaining our struggle. To my surprise, many of our supporters are receiving shocking replies from members of our government. This is not the only instance I've been alerted to so far, and I'm … [Read more...]
