Dear John Letters….

Dear John To whomever you are. There may be some confusion on what it's like to be an atheist in the military. Don't worry! That is okay. I understand. I was a bigoted Christian when I joined the military, too. Fortunately, I've learned what it's like to not judge people based upon some false notion of truth. I'm willing to extend an invitation to you in helping understand that bigotry is wrong. So is lying and intentionally misleading people. Although, I understand mistakes can be … [Read more...]

Chaplain apologized to me for saying “God bless you”

And I wasn't even offended!I was running with a few of my soldiers in the morning 'PT' session, just before sunrise. Our paths happened to cross and he instinctively said "God bless you" as he passed (or something very similar). I hardly noticed it. I had forgotten about it by the time I received this message.Sent: Wednesday, February 29, 2012 6:46 PMTo: Griffith, Justin T SGT USARMY (US)Subject: sorry (UNCLASSIFIED)Classification: UNCLASSIFIEDCaveats: NONEHi, SGT … [Read more...]

The atheist Marine Corps recruit that fought the NO-REL-PREF and won!

I needed a bit of good news. I'm sure many of you are of the same mind.Readers may recall a short burst of posts about people being screwed over with NO-REL-PREF on their records at the first stop in their military career. It started with a Marine Corps recruit who was very adamant about wanting ATHEIST on records. Despite this, she was incorrectly told that it wasn't possible. This post immediately brought countless 'me too' comments and stories, clearly indicating that this is a … [Read more...]

My ‘Atheist / Flying Spaghetti Monster’ military dog tags

My dog tags are now featured on the Flying Spaghetti Monster Wikipedia entry.A little while ago, news broke about a Pastafarian winning the right to wearing a pasta strainer on his head for his official driver's license photograph *edit: it seems that there was no legal battle*. Coincidentally, around the same time, I got a few emails from the contributors to a Wikipedia article on Religious Symbols in the US Military asking if I would contribute a photograph of my Atheist dog tags.Shortly … [Read more...]

There are no atheists in foxholes in sandstorms.

This picture was taken of Justin Griffith in (not so) broad daylight. There are no atheists in foxholes in sandstorms. We're too smart for that shit. Very beige In case you were wondering, yes you can dig a foxhole in the desert. Sand doesn't play nice with the most common weapons we use (M16 / M4), and it's not all that common. But it can be done in the desert terrain. But in a sandstorm? The current sandstorm we are going through out here would render digging efforts completely useless. … [Read more...]
