Anti-gay marriage legislation directly affects straight couples

On September 20, 2011 Don't Ask, Don't Tell was officially repealed. This was a huge victory for all the soldiers, organizations, politicians, and citizens that put their time and effort into combating DADT. Obviously, the LGBT rights issue is far from settled in the military. But here at Fort Bragg, N.C. we've got a special kind of hate and coming from the state legislature. And you can help! The Stiefel Freethought Foundation has a new campaign – combating North Carolina’s … [Read more...]

Military gets nervous when I use Words Such As Burn

After lyrics to Aiden's song Hysteria were intentionally taken out of context to imply that we were going to burn down churches... well Fort Bragg got a little nervous. But I'm proud of them, they really came through the 'crisis' in a big way. We are now specifically guaranteed the right "to be critical of organized religion and it's adherents." In writing, no less. But we are still puzzled by the people who really believe we intend to burn churches! (Including chaplains!) How am I … [Read more...]

God Hates Bleeps

Minnesota Atheists radio show had me on the air last week, and I reached a milestone. I've officially been BLEEPED on the air! @#$% YES! Why? Because I said the phrase "God Hates Fags" - a phrase that is shocking, but nonsensical to me. I was relating to the Minnesota Atheists audience the new developments in our saga. I mentioned that Nate Phelps had joined the lineup and briefly explained his back story. That's quite impossible to do without using the phrase "God hates fags", a phrase coined … [Read more...]

We Just Received a $50,000 Donation From the Stiefel Freethought Foundation

AMAZING! The Stiefel Freethought Foundation has just increased their pledge to Rock Beyond Belief to $50,000. This is enough money to allow the nonreligious military community to fully fund the event on the parade field at Fort Bragg this Fall. All we need now is co-sponsorship from Fort Bragg (which they promised and even sort of delivered before). This removes one of the last possible pseudo-arguments held over our heads. They denied us any funding at all on our first attempt, saying that we … [Read more...]

Todd Stiefel and Words Such As Burn join the lineup

Todd Stiefel has been a cornerstone in the Rock Beyond Belief movement from the very beginning. Over 5 months ago Todd's organization, the Stiefel Freethought Foundation, pledged $10,000 to make our event a reality. Todd has shared the stage with Richard Dawkins, and has spoken across the globe on behalf of the growing secular movement. We are proud to have him speak at our event. Todd Stiefel lives in Raleigh, NC. He is a secular humanist, an atheist and full-time freethought activist. Todd … [Read more...]

RBB hangs out with $10,000 donor, and an openly Atheist politician

Ten days ago (22 Dec 2010), most of the local Rock Beyond Belief crew met up with the Triangle Freethought Society. They were hosting Cecil Bothwell, an atheist whose recent election shook North Carolina's religious community to the core (he won.) Not only did they play dirty during the campaign, sending out flyers and 'nastygrams' denouncing him as an evil atheist, they even attempted to interfere with his inaugruation to the Asheville City Council well after the election was settled. They … [Read more...]

Stiefel Freethought Foundation donates to RBB

We are extremely grateful to bring you the following update: the Stiefel Freethought Foundation (SFF) has just offered to donate $10,000 to Rock Beyond Belief. This is huge for us. The Stiefel Freethought Foundation is certainly doing their part to support nontheists in the military, and we can't thank them enough. The Stiefel Freethought Foundation is the brainchild of Todd Stiefel, a local North Carolina activist who has been one of our closest allies from the very beginning. He is quickly … [Read more...]
