An Insurrection of a Resurrection: a progressive Christian Easter Message

It’s been said that this world is a tough place to live. And parts of it certainly are. Places like Antarctica with it’s frigid cold; the top of mountains with their thin air; deserts with their lack of water and vegetation; the oceans with their tidal waves, hurricanes, etc. – places like these are pretty inhospitable to human life. But it’s not just these sorts of extreme places that are hard to live in. The regular parts of the world are tough too. We learn this as children. We start lea … [Read more...]

Is progressive Christianity a “Christmas monster”?

"In 6-4 B.C., Yeshua of Nazareth was born into a humble peasant family in a tiny town in the backwater hinterlands of Palestine territory on the eastern edge of the Roman Empire. It doesn't really matter if Jesus was born to an actual virgin or not - or even if he was born in Bethlehem for that matter. The point is moot. Either way, he grew up to be our savior. In fact, if Jesus wasn't born to a virgin, being born as a bastard to an unmarried teenaged peasant from the sticks on the fringe of the … [Read more...]

I'm a white male Protestant Christian and though I consider myself relatively well read and … [Read more...]

You believe in God; believe also in me… If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”  John 14:1, 15-17 I don’t think I’m alone in having memories of certain presents tha … [Read more...]

What Jesus and Barney Have in Common

Over the past year, our nation has been divided in ways that we haven’t seen seen since the Civil War. For who knows what reason, just a few days before our recent election, the folks at CNN decided to add fuel to the fire. They published a piece entitled, “Do you believe in a red state Jesus or a blue state Jesus?”The author shares how a factor in how our citizenry is divided is theology. As the author of a book that describes that very phenomenon, I don’t dispute that. But I wince at see … [Read more...]
