No Experience Necessary?

If you wanted an expert opinion on something, usually you'd ask someone with experience on the subject. If you wanted parenting advice, you'd probably ask someone who was a parent, not someone who babysat their siblings a few times. If you wanted to know what sky-diving was like, you'd probably ask someone who'd been skydiving, not someone who'd watched a video of someone skydiving on YouTube. It just makes sense. Experience gives you an insight into a subject that books and Google cannot … [Read more...]

We teach boys to abuse women. We teach girls that abuse = attraction.

When I was in elementary school, a group of boys in my class liked to pick on me. Sometimes they got really mean, and it bothered me, so I told on them. The teacher I talked to told me that they were "just being boys," and that they were probably doing it "because they like you!" When I was a freshman in college, I went to a church on Father's Day that preached a message about how to raise your sons. The pastor stated that there was something wrong with any boy who plays with Barbie dolls. Not … [Read more...]

Fear or Love?

Growing up in a Fundamental Baptist high school, I heard some ridiculous arguments against feminism. My favorite goes something like this: Feminists secretly hate women! That's right! They hate women, and let me tell you why! They want women to be equal to men. That means, they think women don't need men. Feminists won't let men hold doors open for them or pay for their dates. And they won't let men protect them! Chivalry is DEAD because of feminists. That's right. Oh, and don't forget. … [Read more...]

An Update on Relevant Magazine and Hugo Schwyzer

In case anyone would like an update on the Relevant Magazine/Hugo Schwyzer situation, here are a couple of emails I sent Relevant. I have been asked not to quote their responses on my blog, and I will respect that, so the following are my emails, with brief summaries of the response I got in between.   My first email: Dear Relevant Magazine, I write this email hesitantly, because I am expecting to receive condescending pat answers from you, and I don't know how many more of those I can … [Read more...]

Our Mother who art in heaven…

I'm trying this new thing where I don't just think of God as a man. Where I get this image out of my head that God is an old man that looks like Gandalf and has Morgan Freeman's voice. Where I let God out of this box of masculinity that God's been confined to. It's difficult. The images of God that we focus on in the Bible are all quite masculine. God is a Father. God is a King. God as a husband. God is He and Him. And to complicate matters, the preachers that have always told me about God … [Read more...]

Happy International Women’s Day and Feminist Coming Out Day!

March 8th is an exciting day! First of all, it's my wonderful partner's 28th birthday (Happy Birthday, Abe!). Second, it's National Colon Cleansing Day (Remember! A clean colon is a happy colon). And then, it's International Women's Day and Feminist Coming Out Day! As much as I love Abe and colons, this post is going to focus on the latter two. When I first "came out" as a feminist about a year ago, I got a lot of responses. Some positive, some discouraging. But, I think, by far the most … [Read more...]

Women matter.

I was at a rock concert last week and a stranger felt me up. I froze for several seconds--couldn't breathe, couldn't move as those hands moved up and down my waist. Finally, I found the courage to elbow the person in the stomach. Then, I went to the bathroom and cried and ended up missing half of The Darkness singing "Love on the Rocks with No Ice." But a week later, I can still feel those hands. Every time I sit down to write. Every time I look in the mirror. Every time I have a positive … [Read more...]

Tell us we’re not strong enough. But you’re wrong.

Some people out there say that Christianity is for men, because our God came to earth as a man. He was brutally executed on a cross and there was blood and guts and other bad-ass manly things. Some people think that, if the church gets too "feminized," we might replace Jesus with a Disney princess and the cross with a field of dandelions and the broken body and blood of Christ with chocolate milk and cupcakes. Yeah, some people think that way. I don't think those people know a lot about … [Read more...]

Weekend links!

Here are a few of my favorite moments from the internet this week! Enjoy! "Five women who changed God’s rules" by Fred Clark at Slacktivist: Sometimes I don't think God's laws are fair. Sometimes they're sexist. Sometimes I let God know how I feel about those rules. Turns out, this makes me a "biblical woman," and turns out that, God listens to women. This article tells us of five women in the Bible who challenged one of God's unjust laws and paved the way for more equality for women of the … [Read more...]

I’m pro-life. I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-woman.

I'm pro-choice. Therefore, I am pro-life. I'm pro-life. Therefore, I am pro-choice. I couldn't be one without being the other and my support for each side strengthens the other. Let me 'splain....No, there is too much. Let me sum up. I'll start with this--even though the exact point at which human life begins cannot be pin-pointed by science, I still feel uncomfortable with the concept of abortion. I'd like to think that I, personally, would never get an abortion (though, the way I … [Read more...]
