Crisis Alert! Men are doomed!

Note: Some people have spoken to me about being confused about my intent in this blog post. I would like to clarify that this is not an attack on the legitimate struggles that men face because of inequality. This is an expression of my frustration toward a culture that claims female advancement must be suppressed because it is contributing to the "downfall of men." For more information, read my latest blog post. Thank you, and I'm sorry for any lack of clarity! CRISIS ALERT!That's right. W … [Read more...]

Stop breaking off pieces of yourself in the name of Biblical manhood or womanhood!

"Play your position!"I've read this illustration many times: " If a goalie on the soccer team spends all his energy trying to score a goal, he hurts his team because he's not playing his position."True, true. Great advice. But then they continue. They always continue. "You're a woman. You don't need to be doing man's work. You'll hurt your family if you're out pursuing a PhD instead of caring for your children. You'll hurt your family if you are being ambitious toward your own goals rather … [Read more...]

The Stand and Nice Guy Syndrome

One of my favorite books of all time is Stephen King's The Stand, an epic tale in which 99% of the human race is killed by a super-flu. The story follows the survivors, as they fight to make their way in a post-apocalyptic world. My favorite character in the book (and one of my favorite female literary characters of all time) is Frannie Goldsmith, a strong, pregnant, college-aged woman who loses everyone she knows to the super-flu- everyone, that is, except her best friend's brother, Harold … [Read more...]

Here’s to the men!

Last week, I participated in my university's "Take Back the Night" event. We held a rally and a march in which we spoke out against rape and violence against women. Then, we held a speak out in which women shared their stories and their reasons for participating in "Take Back the Night."It was a poignant, sobering, empowering, comforting, enlightening, beautiful night.Although I thoroughly enjoyed marching through fraternity row carrying signs and shouting, "Stop the silence, end the … [Read more...]

Sick of being “miss represented”

I watched a video today that made me cry. That's saying something, because my tear ducts are fairly selective about who they work for. I didn't even cry on The Lion King (and yes, I do have a heart, thank you very much). But this video, a trailer for the film Miss Representation,  made me cry, in sadness and in anger. In desperation and in frustration. I sincerely hope you'll take the time to watch it:This video made me cry because it hit so close to home. The video observes: "Girls get th … [Read more...]

I shouldn’t have to choose between sisters.

What's life like as a Christian feminist? One word:Tense. It's hard to feel completely at home with either group. The feminists that I know rarely agree with my Pro-Life stance on abortion. And the Christians that I know rarely agree with me on anything besides abortion.I hope I've managed to bridge a few gaps between the worlds. But wow, is there ever tension.I've had to sit through church sermons mocking feminists and I've had to sit through feminist meetings mocking Christians (even … [Read more...]

Is it wrong to steal a car?

Is it wrong to steal a car? What if the owner of that car was basically asking for it to be stolen? What if the owner washed it every day so it was as shiny as possible? What if he left it in his drive-way for all the world to see?He didn't make any attempts to cover it up. He didn't hide how great of a car it was. What if he even let people from the neighborhood touch his car, or sit in the passenger seat if they asked? What if he gave people free rides all the time?So how could someone … [Read more...]

Is the church a few steps behind?

I've never heard a pastor talk positively about the feminist movement. But when I read my Bible and see verses where Jesus tells Martha to get out of the kitchen and sit at his feet like a disciple, and when I see verses where Paul tells men in an oppressively patriarchal society to love, serve, and sacrifice for the "property" known as their wives, I can't deny it...Jesus is all for setting women free.Jesus is all about overthrowing society's power structures.I don't believe I should … [Read more...]

Relationships, gender, and cacophonous music

Helmet? Check. Mouth guard? Check. Boxing gear? Check.Okay, I think I'm ready to tackle this issue again. If you're a blogger and you want to say anything about gender roles, you better prepare yourself for a "whole lot of ugly coming at you from a never-ending train of stupid."Anyone who challenges traditional gender roles is going to get sandwiched with opposition. And anyone who defends traditional gender roles is going to find himself/herself in a similar BLT of aversion. Why is this … [Read more...]

That’s not a slut. That’s a person.

I'm not sure what the official rules on labeling a woman a "slut" are. But let me give you a few examples of people who have "earned" the term:I know of a girl who fell in love with a boy, gave him her virginity after dating for several years, and got pregnant. Even though she had never slept with anyone else (and is now happily married to that same boy), she was labeled a slut the entire time she was pregnant.I have a friend who had never slept with anyone. She was labeled a slut because of … [Read more...]
