Content Note: Mark Driscoll, sexism, homophobia, transmisogyny There’s a good chance you’ve heard by now that someone recently dug up some conversations that mega-church pastor Mark Driscoll had on a Mars Hill message board way back in 2000, under the pseudonym of William Wallace II. If you haven’t heard you can catch up at Matthew Paul Turner or Rachel Held Evans' place. You're probably all sick of hearing about this by now and like, "Ugh, I don't want to read another blog post about this." If … [Read more...]

The Magical Marriage Switch

This is a picture from Abe and my wedding. I took it.

[Content Note: Marital Sexual Coercion]Purity culture Christians like to think of marriage as  something almost magical. It's like flipping a magical switch where all the rules, standards, and beliefs about reality change. It's as if saying "I do" plummets you into an entirely new universe. Looking at how things change after the flipping of the magical marriage switch reveals some gaping holes in purity culture thinking. One of the most integral moments in my decision to say "screw … [Read more...]

On Being A “Liberal Fundamentalist”

Are these accusations of "liberal fundamentalism" warranted?I'm thinking back over the times when I or a friend of mine has been called a "liberal fundamentalist:"When I asked a popular Christian blogger to stop repeatedly using a slur. When a queer friend criticized the organization NALT because of Dan Savage's (who has a history of biphobia, … [Read more...]

I've been reading Christian dating books and analyzing the messages that they send (or fail to send) about rape, sexual assault, and consent. My project is called "You Are Not Your Own: Rape, Sexual … [Read more...]

Spiritual Abuse Awareness Week: Violences are Connected

Back in February, Sen. Marco Rubio explained why he opposed the Violence Against Women Act: I could not support the final, entire legislation that contains new provisions that could have potentially adverse consequences. Specifically, this bill would mandate the diversion of a portion of funding from domestic violence programs to sexual assault programs. Rubio has this idea, apparently, that different types of abuse have nothing to do with one another. Not a surprising conclusion in a world … [Read more...]
