If Jesus is Lord, then Caesar is not.

Last night at church, my pastor talked about the phrase "Jesus is Lord," and what that phrase means. After church, a fellow church goer was wanting to start a conversation about what "Jesus is Lord" means to different people and asked if I would write a blog post on the subject. My relationship with the idea that "Jesus is Lord" is complicated in a couple of ways. First of all, as someone who identifies as both a Unitarian Universalist and a Christian, I am wary of the exclusive mindset such … [Read more...]

I Don’t Care If You Call Yourself A Feminist, Part 1

305231_10151127377307722_951545360_n-1

In my time on the feminist internets, I often hear arguments for why EVERYONE should identify as a feminist. "If you think women are people, congrats, you're a feminist!" "Quit saying 'I'm not a feminist, but....' You are a feminist!" Etc., etc., etc. There was a time, when I first became a feminist, when I would have shared quotes saying something similar. But lately, when I see these arguments trying to shame people into identifying as feminists, I get a little uncomfortable. This meme … [Read more...]

Maybe God is a “bitch”

shit-is-fucked-up-and-stuff

In the months following my decision to leave fundamentalism for good, I began to shy away from the idea of God as a God of wrath. No, how could God be wrathful? God is love. God isn't angry at us. God loves us.Maybe I was wrong. The wrath of God in fundamentalism is often used to talk about God sending little children to hell for taking a cookie out of the cookie jar. It's often used to talk about how God was so furious with us disgusting human beings that God had to use his own son, Jes … [Read more...]

Racism, Dehumanization, and Trayvon Martin

Trayvon-Martin-2

Trigger Warning: Racism, dehumanization, discussion of racial violence and the George Zimmerman caseI've spent a few blog posts recently talking about the way that the patriarchal mindsets in some popular Christian dating books dehumanize both men and women in specific ways. They dehumanize men to absolve men of responsibility, or to use "bad" men as a threat to women who refuse to submit to the "loving, godly leadership" of "good" men. They dehumanize women  in order to keep women tied to … [Read more...]

Tony Jones, Peter Rollins, and the trend of “don’t call me racist!”

Image via Manarchist Ryan Gosling Tumblr (click for link)

I've noticed a trend among white, straight, academic cis men in so-called progressive or emergent Christianity where calling someone racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. is a bigger problem than the existence of racism, sexism, and homophobia.Emergent Christianity is a broad term, and progressive an even broader one, so I don't speak about all people from all movements that use these words to define themselves. I want to make that clear before I move on, because I appreciate and benefit from … [Read more...]

Crucifixion and Liberation

[Trigger warnings for abuse, rape, and violence against oppressed groups]I recently wrote a blog post for Rachel Held Evans in which I talked about how many popular images of God are abusive. Someone left this comment: I read something once -and it has troubled me since - that God requiring Jesus to die on the cross 'for our sins' was the equivalent of child abuse. I would love to hear some opinions on this matter.A few commenters jumped in to say that since Jesus IS God, it was a … [Read more...]

They discuss a wide variety of topics, from God, to rape culture, to The Wizard of Oz, to racism/homophobia, to the dangers of fraternizing with bears."For most of my Christian experience, I’ve only ever heard God described in verbs. Very busy verbs.""If you want to know why we need to educate men not to be sexually aggressive, look no further than what happened when Zerlina Maxwell went on … [Read more...]

Enjoy these smart people and their smart words!"If there is one thing that Western Christians and atheists have in common it is a shared legacy of colonizing bodies of color.""You can get a lot of people to do what you want them to do or believe what you want them to believe by saying God will be … [Read more...]

A quote for today…

I'm having trouble today, writing words. When I try to set the words free through my fingers, fear reigns them back in. So, today, I'll share the words of Audre Lorde until I can gather my own.Your silences will not protect you...What are the words you do not yet have? What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence? We have been socialized to respect fear more than our own need for language.Next time, ask: … [Read more...]

The founding fathers get a free pass. The feminists? Not so much.

It is more than acceptable in our society to quote one of the founding fathers to prove a point. I see liberals and conservatives do this alike, and, even though I rarely quote these men, I am not necessarily going to criticize those who do (so if you're going to skip straight to the comments and argue with me about why it's okay to quote the founding fathers, save it).But many of our founding fathers were racists and slave-owners. This is undeniable. We know this, yet we quote their words … [Read more...]
