Who are the Scientology Volunteer Ministers?

The Volunteer Ministers program was launched more than 30 years ago, in response to an appeal by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. Noting a tremendous downturn in the level of ethics and morality in society, and a consequent increase in drugs and crime, Mr. Hubbard wrote: “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love … [Read more...]

Communication–Quantity vs. Quality

Lest there be any question of how much people prize communication, twitter is reported to be generating a billion tweets every five days, and 700 million people use Facebook. Yet, despite all the talking, texting, chatting and video sharing, most people are still bothered by misunderstandings, arguments, and at least the occasional feeling of isolation. A film on the Volunteer Ministers website presents simple communication principles developed by L. Ron Hubbard. The film is part of a free … [Read more...]

What Motivates Us to Promote the Greater Good?

In writing about the role of religion in America's pluralistic society, President Barack Obama states: "The particular faith that motivates each of us can promote a greater good for all of us. Instead of driving us apart, our varied beliefs can bring us together to feed the hungry and comfort the afflicted; to make peace where there is strife and rebuild what has broken; to lift up those who have fallen on hard times." But what is it that calls us, people of faith, to reach out beyond ourselves … [Read more...]

An article in the Times of India discusses a Scientology technique called the touch assist., a procedure that is described fully in the Scientology Handbook booklet called "Assists for Illnesses and Injuries." Here is an excerpt from the article: People often get hurt or fall prey to diseases, injuries or mishaps and accidents. The role of medicine is limited – it treats the body, but overlooks the relationship a person’s mental attitude can have on his own body. A technique called … [Read more...]

From Scientology Parent–Dealing With Toddler Injuries

Fortunately or unfortunately, my daughter is following in her father’s footsteps and is becoming an avid jumper.   On some jumps, she sticks the landing – like in the image above from the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.  On some other jumps…not so much. The other night, My daughter was demanding I take pictures with “Daddy’s Camera” of her taking flying leaps off the couch.  So, I set up to do so, and she takes a few bounces and leaps off the couch and full-on belly flops … [Read more...]

It’s So Flippin Hot

It’s 100 degrees in LA today and it’s “flippin hot,” as a friend of mine would say. This friend is very cute—the way her statements of dislike and upset are peppered with the word “flippin.”  Growing up in South Africa she was raised to be very “proper.”   I find it quaint and adorable. I, on the other hand, was part of the American late-60s iconoclast generation and embraced and reveled in using real curse words as a form of “liberation.” I certainly never … [Read more...]

Back to School

How many millions of kids returned to school this week in the U.S. alone? More than 55,000,000 from what I’ve read. Is school fulfilling its purpose for them? I well remember the late 1950s when the big issue was—are Soviet kids getting a better science and math education that Americans?  This was a big problem.  After all, they beat us into space. The curricula changes resulting did nothing to improve literacy, not to mention productivity, citizenship and character.  Yet what is … [Read more...]
