A joint project of UNESCO and Youth for Human Rights International with the help of Scientology Motor Vessel Freewinds, provides human rights education training to St. Kitts and Nevis teachers, correctional officers and religious leaders.

(PRWEB) April 01, 2015

St. Kitts and Nevis educators participated in a program March 4-5 that launched a joint UNESCO and Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) project to implement human rights education throughout St. Kitts and Nevis.

The project was timed to coincide with the 12th annual Youth for Human Rights International World Educational Tour arriving on the islands. Two workshops were conducted by Youth for Human Rights International and the port captain of the Freewinds, a familiar friend who works with St. Kitts and Nevis on a variety of humanitarian programs throughout the year.

According to a survey conducted by Human Rights USA, fewer that 10 percent of the population was aware of what human rights consist of. This survey, conducted in 1997, made it very clear that human rights education is not only vital but also sadly lacking.

To fill this gap, Youth for Human Rights International was founded in 2001 and carries out educational programs across the globe.

The workshops trained teachers from both islands to present the Youth for Human Rights curriculum to their students. The learned to do this by participating personally in the lessons: watching video presentations on the articles of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and doing the practical assignments covered in the Youth for Human Rights educational program.

The teachers left with a new perspective on human rights, enthusiastic about sharing this with their pupils. And to help them implement the program, all schools on both islands are being supplied sets of the Youth for Human Rights Education Package.

“We hope that sometime in the future we can spread this project to other Caribbean Islands,” said one official attending the workshops.

“It has been very exciting to be involved in this initiative,” says Ambra Calzolari, Human Rights Coordinator for the Church of Scientology International. “I’m eager to see the difference it will make when every student in an entire small nation learns their human rights and their responsibility to protect the rights of others.”

The Youth for Human Rights World Tour has traveled some 450,000 miles and visited more than 80 countries, meeting with youth, educators and officials and agencies to promote education in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights to create a generation of advocates for tolerance and peace.

The Church of Scientology supports United for Human Rights (UHR) and its program for young people, Youth for Human Rights. United for Human Rights has provided educational materials in 17 languages to more than 150 nations. Some 21,000 schools have used its human rights materials.

To make United for Human Rights and the other humanitarian and social betterment initiatives it supports even more broadly available, the Church of Scientology has published a brochure, Voice for Humanity—Real Help, Real Results.

Inspired by the words of L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of the Scientology religion, that “a being is only as valuable as he can serve others,” Scientologists wholeheartedly support these programs. Participation and collaboration in these initiatives is invited and welcomed from all who seek to improve conditions for themselves and others.
