Russia Gives France a Puppy to Replace Police Dog Killed During Paris Terror Attacks December 1, 2015

Last week I told you about the brave “Jack Bauer” of dogs who saved many lives, but lost his own, tracking down the terrorists from the attack on Paris. The 7-year-old Belgian Malinois named Diesel was sent into the building to find booby traps but was reportedly blown up when a female terrorist came out and detonated her suicide vest.

This week, in a gesture of solidarity with the people of France, Russian officials have offered to send an Alsatian puppy to replace Diesel, the French police dog who died in the line of duty.

Russia’s interior minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said he had written to his French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve offering to send a puppy named Dobrynya to replace Diesel, a Belgian Shepherd killed in a huge raid north of Paris last Wednesday.

Kolokoltsev said that as “a sign of solidarity with the people and police of France,” he was offering the puppy, which “will be able to occupy the place in service of the police dog Diesel killed during a special operation to neutralise terrorists.”

The dog is named after a hero of Russian folk legend, Dobrynya Nikitch, famed for his strength, goodness and courage, he added.

One official in Moscow said, “Our four-legged friends also serve the police, protecting society from terrorist threats.”

It is always amazing to me how the love and loyalty of a dog can have such an incredible impact on the human beings around them.   France and Russia don’t always find themselves on the same side of the international political aisle, yet the sacrifice of Diesel the dog has bound them together.

I think that is a pretty incredible legacy for such a brave pup to have left.
