Do you have a thankful heart? I mean, when something good happens in your life, do you thank God for it? Because I’m not so great at it. Sure I thank God for a lot of things- my wife, my family, the baby growing inside of Catherine, but I often forget to thank God for the good things that aren’t so obvious.
I’m reminded of my dad, who by my estimation is one of the most Godly men on Earth (although he’d humbly disagree). Anytime anything relatively good happens in his life or his family’s life, I always hear a “God is good” from him. And he doesn’t just say it in a cliche sort of way, he says it with such conviction.
I’ll give you an example, a few weeks ago Catherine and I bought a new car. We spent more than we wanted to but we justified it by reasoning that we would have it for years to come and it’s big enough to accommodate a growing family. After buying the car, I thought about the price, the benefits of having a bigger car, the monthly payments that accompany the car and the enjoyment we’d get from the car, but not once did I stop to thank God for blessing us with the car. Conversely, when I told my dad we bought a new car, the first thing out of his mouth was “God is good, isn’t he?”
Sometimes I’m humbled by others’ faithfulness. I need to be more like my dad. I need to keep a thankful heart at all times. I’m so blessed in so many ways yet I often don’t voice my appreciation to the God who handed my those blessings. So let me start right now.
I thank God for allowing me to openly express his love in such a public way. I’m thankful to live in a country that allows me that freedom. I’m also thankful for the four cups of coffee I just had at my favorite local breakfast spot. This month, I’m challenging myself to be more aware of God’s blessings in my life and to offer Him thanks when I think of them.
