For the Sake of our Children: Redefining the Legacy of Success

Single-Mom

I wrote this for the Huffington Post last year at the request of Arianna Huffington in reply to an email I sent her responding to a new discussion she is holding on how to redefine success for women.  Make sense?  :)The current definition of success, in which we drive ourselves into the ground, if  not the grave, and in which working to the point of exhaustion and burnout is considered a badge of honor, was created by men. It's a model of success that's not working for women, and it's not wor … [Read more...]

If We Want our Kids to Grow Up…Perhaps We Need to Grow Up!

coach-yelling-at-player

I was at my granddaughter’s soccer game last week.  (She’s going to be 5 this month.)  The team is made up of 4-6 year olds. During the game, a grandpa from the opposing team yelled at his grandson: Next time I come, I better see you score a goal!  This on top of other berating comments yelled at his grandson throughout the game.  The kid couldn’t have been more than 6 years old!I know this an ongoing story—a story played out on fields and courts across the country.  Story after story has be … [Read more...]

The Key to Building a High Impact Men’s Ministry

Ethopia-Swartz-Preschool-men-and-boys_0

If you’ve worked in men’s ministry, or if you know anything about men’s ministry in the Church today, you no doubt read the title of this post and thought, “yah, right!”  More smoke.  More mirrors.  No substance. It’s tough slogging in the men’s ministry world in most churches today.  First of all, most churches aren’t doing a great job of reaching men at all let alone getting some of them into a ministry focused on men.  Second, while there are all kinds of great, exceptional programs and cur … [Read more...]

Tommy Heads to Preschool–And Why That May Not Be a Good Thing!

upset-boy-ftr

Excerpted from my book, Searching for Tom Sawyer: How Parents and Congregations Can Stop the Exodus of Boys from Church. When Tommy turns two, his parents, like many parents, begin thinking about preschool. Preschool is a fairly new phenomenon in our country. In the 1960s, about five hundred thousand kids attended preschool. (When I was a kid, the girl next door, about my age, had to go to nursery school. We all wondered what was wrong with her!) Today, preschool has become almost mandatory … [Read more...]
