Victor Reppert on Atheist Responses to Moral Arguments

Commenting on how atheists have responded to William Lane Craig's moral argument, Victor Reppert writes this.Yet, when I hear atheists talking about moral arguments, they always assume that the advocate of the moral argument is saying that we have to believe in God to lead moral lives, (and indignantly argue that we don't have to believe in God to lead moral lives) in spite of the fact that Christian advocates of moral arguments, at least the ones I am familiar with NEVER say … [Read more...]

How Not to Debate ‘the’ Moral Argument: Reply to PZ Meyers

In a recent post, PZ Myers complains that a couple of atheists botched their response to 'the' moral argument for God's existence.[1] He writes:There is a common line of attack Christians use in debates with atheists, and I genuinely detest it. It’s to ask the question, “where do your morals come from?” I detest it because it is not a sincere question at all — they don’t care about your answer, they’re just trying to get you to say that you do not accept the authority of a deity, so that the … [Read more...]

Strange debate experience

Yesterday I was at REASONFEST 2012 at Lawrence, Kansas, where the organizers had set me up to debate whether Islam and science can coexist. It was a strange experience. My opponent, a Muslim social scientist called Leila Chahine, turned out to be more of an illustration of my thesis than anything else. From creationism to science-in-the-Quran apologetics, she endorsed all the stereotypically conservative Muslim pseudoscientific nonsense. She kind of made my point for me; I should have turned my … [Read more...]

Worst Atheist Debaters

Like my list of "Best Atheist Debaters," I don't know of any way to be fully objective about this sort of thing. Also, like the other list, I fully recognize that others may disagree. Nevertheless, for what it's worth, here is my list of worst atheist debaters, organized by topic.Topic: God's ExistenceFlew, Antony (technically he doesn't belong on a list of atheists)Nielsen, KaiStein, GordonZindler, FrankTopic: Morality Without GodKurtz, Paul (for an example, see here)Taylor, RichardTopic: … [Read more...]

Edward Feser on Dawkins’ Refusal to Debate WLC

As I've written before, I'm a huge fan of the work Richard Dawkins has done to promote science and reason. I think he is at his best when he he talks or writes about science and especially his primary area of expertise, biology. Dawkins' book, The Blind Watchmaker, had a big influence on me a long time ago, so much so that I dedicated The Empty Tomb to Dawkins.  On the other hand, philosophy of religion is not Dawkins' area of expertise; his book The God Delusion is not nearly as well … [Read more...]

Best Atheist Debate Performances (revised 3-Apr-14)

The Secular Outpost seems to consistently get a lot of traffic from people who are doing Internet searches for "best atheist debaters." This post is for them. This post was originally titled "Best Atheist Debaters." Just as I changed the old post "Worst Atheist Debaters" to "Worst Atheist Debate Performances," I've changed this post from "Best Atheist Debate Performances." The logic is simple: anyone can get lucky and have an exceptionally good day or exceptionally bad day. So with that … [Read more...]

Peter Atkins’ Opening and Closing Statements for the Craig-Atkins Debate (2011)

(Posted with the permission of Peter Atkins.)Opening StatementMy immediate task is to set out my stall, not to respond to Dr Craig’s arguments at this stage: that will come later. It is, in fact, my task to bring you forward from the eleventh century, where you have been immersed with considerable erudition for the past 20 minutes, to the twenty-first century, and to present arguments based on a thousand years of increasing knowledge about the world. Dr Craig would have been a wonderful medieval … [Read more...]

Reply to Wintery Knight’s Review of the Craig-Law Debate

I recently submitted the following feedback to WinteryKnight's review of the Craig-Law debate.Wintery Knight -- You must have listened to a different debate than the one I did. For example, in summarizing Stephen Law's first rebuttal, you write: "Craig thinks that you need an objective standard in order to judge things as objectively good or evil. But that’s false. I can use my subjective opinions to claim that some things are objective evil. If God doesn’t do what I like (prevent moral and nat … [Read more...]
