They keep telling me to look at the fruits of the Legion of Christ.

Well, the harvest keeps rolling in. Here's the latest installment: An Irish-born Chilean priest convicted of sexually abusing a minor while chaplain at a school in Santiago was sentenced to four years of probation Tuesday.A court in the Chilean capital also banned the Rev. John O'Reilly from any job near children and ordered that his genetic data be added to a registry for abusers.O'Reilly, who has denied any wrongdoing, was not present during the sentencing. Prosecutors had asked for a … [Read more...]

Is Christine Mayr-Lumetzberger worthy of the priesthood?

The great Elizabeth Scalia points out that prophets, like seminarians, tend to have something in common: they are mighty reluctant to take the job that heaven foists on them.  They may certainly feel called, but they do not feel worthy -- and they do not expect to slither comfortably into their vocations. We start with our unworthiness, and we proceed to God's mercy. That is the only path. There is no other path. Read the rest at the Register. … [Read more...]

At the Register: Gay Man Refused Last Rites?

Or something else entirely?  His story stinks to high heaven, and if the priest has another one, I doubt he's free to tell it.Link doesn't seem to be working for everyone.  If you can't access the story through the link above, you can cut and paste this:http://www.ncregister.com/blog/simcha-fisher/gay-man-refused-last-rites … [Read more...]

Yet another reason the all male priesthood makes sense

Chatting on Facebook about how nice it would be to hear more from men about NFP -- and how tricky it was for me to try to address men, as someone who is not their wife or mother.   We had the following exchange: Barbara Cobb: "In general men are more willing to accept direction from other men rather than women, including or especially their wives. I think that's why God in His wisdom set up an all-male priesthood."Me:  "Wow, I never thought of that. How many men would go to a woman priest f … [Read more...]

Time for Married Priests?

NBC did a story on married priests, and included comments by Mark Shea.  Looks like they actually did some research, and tried to present a balanced picture.  They tried to answer the question:  what would happen if the Catholic Church (by which they mean the Western rite -- and no, I never get it straight if I'm supposed to say "Latin" or "Roman" or "Western" or what.  You know who I mean) dropped the celibacy requirement for priests?  Wouldn't that solve the vocations crisis?  I don't have … [Read more...]

Where Be Story Editor?

Roland Joffé's new movie, There Be Dragons, is about half a good movie.  What is good is so good that it makes the bad parts doubly frustrating.Let's start with the good.  The best part was, happily, Charlie Cox, who plays Opus Dei's founder, Josemaria Escriva.  Knowing very little about the actual man, I had none of the mental baggage that can trouble a fan ("That's not how I pictured Mr. Tumnus!").  The Fr. Josemaria he portrays is a strong, happy, humorous man who is not like other men.  W … [Read more...]
