Breaking News: “Vacation” receives DG (IWY) rating! July 28, 2015

I was a little surprised to be invited to a press screening for “Vacation” – an downdating  or unbooting of the old Chevy Chase Griswold Family vacation comedies.

From the opening lyrics of the soundtrack, laden with “f” bombs, well, it just got worse. If any family has a vacation like this, all I can say is: someone call the Department of Children Services. The film, too, is child abuse, adult abuse and elder abuse all in one. That song is not in my repertoire.

If this is humor, why bother? It’s crud.

Props for Rusty renting a car manufactured in Albania, though.

Comedy can be subversive and edgy but this is an in-your-face assault.

The T.H.I.N.K. protocol can be applied here.

T – is it true? Not that I’ve ever seen or imagined.

H – is it helpful? No.

I – is it inspiring? No.

N – Is it necessary? Lord, no.

K – Is it kind? No and that’s why it gets my rating:

DG = Don’t Go

And if you do: (IWY = I Warned You).

This isn’t even bait and switch – bait audiences with crud passing as comedy to deliver a warm pro-family message? It doesn’t work. Both parents are idiots, the aunt and uncle are worse, and if you need a sewage pool and joking about pedophilia for laughs, well. Nothing left to say. What a waste of talent, resources – and what parent let their kids even act in this mess?  How is this ever … comedy?

The good news is I didn’t see any African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American or any people other than white people in the film thus proving without argument that white people are in need of cultural rescue, rehabilitation and redemption.

Good grief.
