It’s been a busy time here on the Lido island of Venice, Italy! I am a member of the SIGNIS jury for the third time – an honor and a privilege. The first time was in 2000, then 2009 (we gave “The Hurt Locker” our award) and now this year. We have a few more films to see before voting on the film to receive the SIGNIS Award.

So far we have seen films in competition and several outside of competition, including EVEREST, SPOTLIGHT and Amy Berg’s terrific documentary JANIS on the life of Janis Joplin. My review of SPOTLIGHT will come out next week.

EVEREST was just ok. If you really want to see the best movie about the catastrophe on the mountain in 1996 is the documentary IMAX version “Everest” that came out in 1998. This new one seems to have been edited in such a way as to flatten all the characters and why the tragedy occurred is minimized. I other words, the emotional quotient is zilch.

JANIS, much like AMY that came out over the summer, is a wonderful look at this solitary blue grass, bluesy rocker. You’ll just fall in love with her energy, her voice and weep that such a talent, like Amy Winehouse, was lost to loneliness, drugs and alcohol. Brilliant film.

To be continued ….
