Is it a good thing Pope Francis was named TIME’s Person of the Year?

time-person-of-the-year-cover-pope-francis

Some time ago I was asked to be an expert contributor on film, TV and popular culture to ALETEIA news of the world from a Catholic perspective). Today one of the editor's asked several contributors to consider four questions and I commented for the first time (I didn't have a lot of time so I responded to the questions very briefly): 1) Are you surprised Pope Francis was picked?  2) Is this a good thing or a bad thing for the Church and her mission of evangelization? 3) Was Pope Francis … [Read more...]

Plato comes to life in DreamWorks “The Croods”

croods_ver8

In "The Croods," the prehistoric caveman Grug (voice of Nicolas Cage) is the head of the Crood family. These beings believe they are the only creatures of their kind in existence. They live somewhere on the earth in a dark cave and only go out during the day if necessary. Grug tells the younger members of the family -- Eep (voice of Emma Stone), Thunk (voice of Clark Duke) and Sandy (Randy Thom) -- the same bedtime story every night: Obey the rules of the cave that are marked on … [Read more...]

Compliance – I hated this movie

compliance-poster

I hated this movie. It’s not a bad movie, I just hated it.  And I do not say this lightly. The only people who might appreciate this film are sociologists, anthropologists, educators, psychiatrists and psychologists. There is no other reason to see this that I can fathom, except for the clinical. Sure, it's important because it shines a mirror on how Americans don't think. But from beginning to end the story builds up and is relentless in its march to the impossible but true … [Read more...]

Sister Rose’s blog reaches 500,000 hits today

Since I moved my blog to Wordpress on October 5, 2008 I never dreamed of 500.000 hits or page views. In this day of YouTube videos getting a million hits in a day or an hour, this half million in three years eight months, an average of 300 hits a day with 2,900 in one day in 2010, does not seem like much in the virtual scheme of things. Yet it provides me with a motive of thanksgiving for the Internet and the gift of communication between God's people the world over and who knows? Maybe the … [Read more...]

I asked him one time about the … [Read more...]
