Facebook at 10: a Christ-haunted political forum, family reunion, prayer group

Photo: AP

Last week marked the 10th anniversary of Facebook, the social networking site founded more or less (see the 2010 film "The Social Network") by Mark Zuckerberg in his dorm room at Harvard University. OK, Wikipedia says he co-founded Facebook with four other guys, but we really don't remember them, do we? And there were three others who claimed Zuckerberg stole their idea, a legal battle that was settled out of court. In an interview Feb. 4 with Zuckerberg on the "Today" show, there was no … [Read more...]

Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 5.23.54 PM

Meeting Jesus at the movies might seem impossible to some … but this session will look at sacramental ways to find God in the dark and secrets to discovering heroes who exemplify the teaching of the Lord Jesus in laughter and tears. It includes an analysis of "The Hunger Games" film as a cultural parable that engages the sacramental imagination (with thanks to Sr. Nancy Usslemann, FSP) This presentation was given at the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Nov. 22, … [Read more...]

Sr. Rose’s Oscar Picks for Best Picture 2013

Lincoln-Movie-

I think Lincoln should win this category, but don't be surprised if Silver Linings, Argo, Les Miz, or Zero Dark Thirty actually do take home Oscar. A real surprise would be Django Unchained. Argo – The best performance in Ben Affleck’s political thriller is by Alan Arkin who plays a Hollywood producer dedicated to making a great fake movie to provide a cover for a CIA agent, played by Ben Affleck, who poses as a Canadian filmmaker, to rescue six members of the US diplomatic staff from … [Read more...]

Sister Rose’s blog reaches 500,000 hits today

Since I moved my blog to Wordpress on October 5, 2008 I never dreamed of 500.000 hits or page views. In this day of YouTube videos getting a million hits in a day or an hour, this half million in three years eight months, an average of 300 hits a day with 2,900 in one day in 2010, does not seem like much in the virtual scheme of things. Yet it provides me with a motive of thanksgiving for the Internet and the gift of communication between God's people the world over and who knows? Maybe the … [Read more...]
