I AM GABRIEL straight to DVD

I Am Gabriel 2012

This fantasy story takes place in a broken-down rural Texas town where people are being evicted from their homes and farms, others are ill, lack faith, or face other challenges. Then into their midst comes a 12-year old boy who utters words of faith to encourage and invite people to faith. All he will say is, “I am Gabriel.” He then proceeds, in an attitude of severe humor deprivation, to be a voice of encouragement to the good towns people. And he knows things about them no one else … [Read more...]

American Bible Challenge

"The American Bible Challenge" premieres on the Game Show Network tonight - Photo (c) GSN

When I first heard of the Game Show Network's idea for a new game show, I wondered: How is it no one ever thought of it before? There is so much material in the scriptures that if the producers play it right, they could have many seasons. It could be a way to bring Christians together around the Word. On the set of Game Show Network's "The American Bible Challenge" with host Jeff Foxworthy. ((c) GSN)This hourlong show that tests Bible knowledge is hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy ("Are You … [Read more...]

Bows, arrows and a sword: Girls rock this year on film

Princess Merida, voiced by Kelly Macdonald, in Disney/Pixar's "Brave" (Disney/Pixar)

2012 is turning out to be a banner year for films with significant female lead characters: warriors, weapons and all. Made on half that budget, "The Hunger Games" opened March 25 with a box office of $152.5 million and has brought $400 million in North America and nearly $650 million worldwide. (The DVD is due out Aug. 18.) "Snow White and the Huntsman," made … [Read more...]

Sister Rose’s blog reaches 500,000 hits today

Since I moved my blog to Wordpress on October 5, 2008 I never dreamed of 500.000 hits or page views. In this day of YouTube videos getting a million hits in a day or an hour, this half million in three years eight months, an average of 300 hits a day with 2,900 in one day in 2010, does not seem like much in the virtual scheme of things. Yet it provides me with a motive of thanksgiving for the Internet and the gift of communication between God's people the world over and who knows? Maybe the … [Read more...]

Bandslam & Ponyo open this weekend

I like Bandslam: see my review at Eye on Entertainment August 2009 St. Anthony Messenger. It's entertaining and a big vote for the arts in the curriculum.   Then there's Ponyo click here and scroll down to CAPSULES. I saw it at the Venice International Film Festival last year; this is a longer review: Ponyo click here and scroll down. The TV ads make Ponyo look like a linear tale; it is not according to the English subtitles we saw at the Venice Film Festival. Now that the film is dubbed, … [Read more...]
