TF: August and everything after

Even the most fecund soil needs to lie fallow on occasion (fecund being the most polite euphemism I can think of for Tim LaHaye's theological politics and Jerry Jenkins' storytelling), so, while it pains me to see the Bruce Dies and Double Wedding countdowns stalled in one place, I'm going to take a bit of a mini-vacation from Tribulation Force Mondays, returning to the topic with refreshed eyes and a refreshed tolerance for terrible, terrible prose.

So we'll be picking up our survey of the World's Worst Books on Sept. 6. Apart from the TF posts, the regular irregular blogging here should continue as usual.

But don't worry — Tribulation Force will be just as bad when we resume reading it in September. Maybe even worse, actually.

Anyway, thanks for your patience, sorry for the inconvenience, thanks, sorry, sorry, thanks, etc.

  • Amaryllis, who alas has no blog to plug, but thanks the rest of you for your good work

    @semperfiona: I believe you’re looking for
    http://dylanstafne.blogspot.com/
    for the Tea-Party-Patriot series.
@LeGal: you’re getting married soon? Felicitations!

  • Emcee

I was going to start a blog, but wow… suddenly so much to live up to. I would need to have two weeks’ worth of hilarious and insightful posts ready before I felt comfortable even hinting that it existed.
Based on your postings here, I can’t imagine that would really be too hard for you…
And some second-hand plugging (which is only fair, since I was plugging this blog to him last night…) Check out http://www.watchforeverwednesday.com It’s a web-serial that focuses of four female comic book fans (one of whom works in a comic book shop). The show’s slogan is “Fangirls. We’re here. Get used to it.” Think it would be appreciated by quite a few people here.

@Will: Hell, I just took the plunge and dived right in. Now I’m here, 32 posts on EoA later … :P

Ooh, ego boost. I’m all tingly. Thank you! But I tend to be strategic in my slacktivist posting, and I have so many inventive and intelligent people to work with that I think my own quality is raised. Leave me alone and you’ll get semicoherent pseudophilosophical rambling reminiscent of George Carlin’s heavy drug years, questionable poetry about my not-all-that-fascinating romantic problems, and four-page dissertations on Why Harry Kim Should Have Died. Unless that’s awesome? I don’t know.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/shiftercat ShifterCat

Hmm. It occurs to me that I should also post some recipes.

    Well, I’d probably read that.
But since my last blogpost was on, umm, salt-water taffy, I’m probably not the expert on either Wit nor Wisdom.
I do heartily second or third or whatever those who recommend Kit Whitfield’s blog. I think that the link in her name still goes to the old address, but should automatically forward you to the new one.
(That’s http://kitwhitfield.blogspot.com/ if I messed up the html)

I’m not going to promote my own blog; it’s pretty unfocused and tends to ramble on about this and that.
However, I will shamelessly direct folks over to Right Behind, where I have taken a brilliant comment made by Chris The Cynic and adapted it to ‘film’ for the amusement of the Slacktivites at large.

After I saw my first Christian Youth Movie (and picked my jaw off the floor), I imagined where I might say what I thought, and now I haz a blog! The crazy of Pamela’s Prayer and Soon cannot be contained! :D

Oh, and I have an Urgent Guy Blod Accent Update:
In The Experience in Sound and Drama series, Guy Blod’s accent is GERMAN! (Though it seems to be a German accent from someone who learned about German accents from watching Mike Myers in Sprockets.)

  • Will Wildman

So… Guy Blod has a French name, a German accent, and American gay caricature? I’m just waiting to find out that his mother is Japanese and his father is Zimbabwean. He’s some kind of multicultural anomaly that defies all logic.

I’d be tempted to do more Xtranormal pieces, but the limitations (only monologues and dialogs) eliminate a lot of the good RB stuff. But I’m open to suggestions.

  • Coyote (who is reading, just lurks. a lot.)

…Huh. I was thinking about digging about for your e-mail address so I could say something like “You’ve been doing this for a crazy long time, vacation you have earned, no?” Or something.
As has been said multiple times, rest well, the rest of your blog posts are definitely excellent reading in the meantime, and I look forward to your return!

  • http://profile.typepad.com/shiftercat ShifterCat

I have two things to ask for the Slacktivites’ help with:
    1. I notice that the Right Behind index of LB posts hasn’t been updated in a long time. It’d be nice if someone with the proper know-how could do that, since I’ve found it a much handier link to send to friends than asking them to scroll way way back in the site archives.
    2. I seem to recall a post, or perhaps part of a post, in which Fred mentioned a Muslim scholar who’s been traveling around doing a standing wager with terrorists: “We sit down for a debate, and if you convince me that the Qu’ran supports terrorism, I’ll join you. But if I prove to you that it doesn’t, you have to stop.” But I’m having trouble finding the reference. Can anyone help?

  • interleaper

ShifterCat, re pt. 2: is this what you’re after?

  • Froborr

@MercuryBlue: Thanks muchly for the offer. I did some research, and Dreamwidth looks PERFECT… except for the fact that my office network has it flagged as social networking (banned) rather than blogging (allowed). Many frownies ensue.

  • MercuryBlue

    wtf.

  • http://animated-discussions.blogspot.com Froborr

I think it might be because it’s a code fork off Livejournal? They have Livejournal on the banned list (along with Facebook and Twitter) because you’re not allowed to do social networking, but they don’t ban Blogger or the major political blogs because you’re allowed to look at news and opinion. It gets pretty arbitrary at the borders. (May favorite is that, for a long time, the main page of the webcomic Goats was blocked… but the archives weren’t.)

  • http://profile.typepad.com/shiftercat ShifterCat

@interleaper: Yes! Thank you! Mr. ShifterCat is arguing with one of those idiots who claims “There’s no such thing as a peaceful Muslim”.

  • hapax

May favorite is that, for a long time, the main page of the webcomic Goats was blocked… but the archives weren’t.
    I can beat that.
At my library, the staff computers block Amazon.com, and almost all publishers’ and authors’ websites (including the talented Kit Whitfield’s), for “questionable content.”
You know what’s NOT blocked? Questionable Content.

*is immediately doubled over laughing at the irony X-D *

  • http://profile.typepad.com/shiftercat ShifterCat

…And I just noticed that the article is from 2005, and his program’s been proved less effective since then. :(

  • MercuryBlue

I get three-quarters of my news and opinion via Dreamwidth. Give me a few minutes and I can link you to assorted linkspams of same. Personal favorite opinion topic of the month: did you know that ‘deathmarch’ is either a software development term or a writing term and certainly in no way offensive to anyone who’s related to or sympathetic to those related to anyone who died on the Bataan Death March or the Trail of Tears?

  • http://elliemurasaki.dreamwidth.org MercuryBlue

Yeah. Here. Tell me that is not political commentary. Even if it is on a social media platform.
Oh fuck you Typepad. What is this ‘enter a valid URL’ thing?

  • Just Some Guy

You know, this kinda reminds me of that scene in Freefall where a cockroach takes a bite of Sam Starfall’s dinner, curls up and dies, prompting Sam to triumphantly declare: “Ha! Survival of the fittest, baby!”

  • korou

Fred, thank you very much for all your hard work. We all love reading your LB posts. Have a good holiday!

  • LeGal

Thanks, Amaryllis. I’m very excited, although feeling a little overwhelmed being only three weeks out and THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO — yikes!!

  • http://animated-discussions.blogspot.com Froborr

@hapax: And if you’re not blocking Pintsize, you might as well not bother to block anything.
@MercuryBlue: I understand, believe me I do. But this is the IT department. There is no reasoning with them. You simply keep your head down and try to avoid their wrath.

  • Zippy

    Have a fun summer, Fred!

@Mitch: Welcome. Please don’t kill us with sheep. (*tribal welcome greeting*)
Hope you’ll try the “Inspired by Fred” collection. Mouse & Ruby’s stuff are weekly blogs and are current. They will keep posting weekly all summer. As for the Left Behind Kids series, don’t let the word “kids” fool you. It deals with the mature topics that introduced the LB series.

I’m not a member of this site, as I only heard of it in the past few days. A quick glance shows it to be Reformed denomination, with matching guidelines for polite posting.

They have a forum dedicated to Revelation And Eschatology at:
    http://www.puritanboard.com/f46/
I don’t know why so many of their threads are locked. Some forum boards simply lock threads that haven’t been posted in for a while, to prevent necroposting or to stifle spambots.

Only the people’s social practice is the criterion of knowledge for people outside the standard. The standard of truth is only social practice.Do you think so?

When’s the next post coming? If you don’t have the time, or the energy, that’s okay, but make sure to tell us.

  • John Kingston

Something I was just wondering. Leaving aside the abhuman reactions of the characters in the books, and the bizare politics, would, for example, a Culture Mind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Culture), be able to duplicate or fake the diving miracles in the left Behind series?
