Zechariah 7:8-12

Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render true judgements, show kindness and mercy to one another; do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.

But they refused to listen, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears in order not to hear. They made their hearts adamant in order not to hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.

I like that expression, “turned a stubborn shoulder”. I can just picture it.

They probably stuck fingers in ears and sang ‘la la la I can’t hear you’.

    Off-topic but “Hey Slack” –

New book being released this Tuesday: “The leftovers” by Tom Perrotta.

    ‘Nuff said.

Totally off-topic, and (more or less) crossposted from The Slacktiverse:

As of today I’ve been sober for 11 years. I mention this here, as I do every year, not because I’m seeking praise or congratulations (but thanks in advance to anyone who provides such), but rather in the hope that if there’s anyone out there who needs it, reading it will provide at least some amount of hope, or inspiration, or…something. I’d be lying if I said it’s easy, but it gets easier, eventually, and in time you may find that, like me, it’s no longer really even muich of a consideration.

Amazing how so many people who say they Believe Every Word The Bible Says, ignore so very much of what it says.

In a similar vein, I found this today:
“America is rich – still the wealthiest nation ever. But too many at the
top are grabbing the gains. No person or corporation should be allowed
to take from America while giving little or nothing back. The super-rich
who got tax breaks and bailouts should now pay full taxes – and help
create jobs here, not overseas. Those who do well in America should do
well by America.”  Contract for the American Dream

    Congratulations, Jon Maki!

Also, speaking of showing kindness and mercy, one of our Muslim neighbors just stopped by with a beautiful spinach, chicken and rice dish. (It’s Ramadan, time to share food.) Yesterday, the neighbors next door (atheists, I’m pretty sure) handed over some gorgeous peppers from their garden, because if the power went off, people would be eating salads (and because they have gorgeous sweet peppers). And yesterday the evangelical Christian family up the street with a pair of athletic young people living at home made a point of checking with all the seniors, singles, and other families that didn’t have athletic young people in residence, to make sure we all knew to call on them in case we encountered any problems during the hurricane. And just checked again to make sure everything was OK, no damage, no heavy branches needed moving, power on, phone working, etc.

I am surrounded by kindness and mercy.

I hope everyone else who was in Irene’s path is OK.

    Great wrath comin’

I think I found a picture of that Zechariah.

I have no stomach of this obscure back-of-the-Old-testament nonsense, let’s get back to how Revelations tells me that I’m better than everyone else.

Congratulations on your anniversary Jon. You have every reason to be really proud of yourself.

Would it be petty of me to rub this passage in the faces of those who condemn the poor with one thought and extol their devotion to God with the other?
