I try to keep Christmas music separate the rest of the year, but “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is a terrific song. It’s not so much about one particular holiday as about the holidays in general. I seem to be collecting versions of that song, so far including: Bright Eyes, Cold Play, The Pretenders, Sarah McLachlan and Hem.

And for a collection of covers of John Hiatt’s “Have a Little Faith in Me,” see this earlier post.

I generally have disliked “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, but I love how Starflyer 59 pegs the dismal melancholy just below the surface.

    Last year brought one
of my very favourite renditions of “Have Yourself a Merry Little
    Christmas”
, as performed very, um, directly by John Darnielle of/aka the Mountain Goats.

And yet they still repeat the “shining bough” line, which was written for Frank Sinatra in an effort to cheer the song up.

Wikipedia suggests the original lyrics were quite bleak. (“Have yourself a merry little Christmas / It may be your last / Next year, we may all be living in the past.”) Has anyone done a mix-up with some of the original lyrics?

I’m a big fan of Tori Amos’ version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas- very haunting & not terribly cheerful, but I don’t particularly like cheerful versions of that song.

I thought the song was originally from Meet Me In St. Louis- the lyrics I learned during the show for the “shining bough” bit were “through the years we all will be together/ if the Lord allow / until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow.” Which…is not the best bit of lyric writing ever seen.

You’re quite right (except it was “if the fates allow”).   The song was written for “Meet Me In St. Louis”, and originally had an even more depressing set of lyrics (“Have yourself a merry little Christmas / it may be your last / next year we will all be living in the past…”).  Minelli and Garland asked the lyricist, Hugh Martin, to please make it less bleak, and the result was the “muddle through somehow” version, which is by far my favorite.  It was a big hit during the war years when a lot of people were doing a lot of muddling.

Years later, in 1957, Sinatra wanted to record it for an album called “A Jolly Christmas” and asked Martin if he could “jolly up” that line for him, and that’s where we get the “highest bough” version.  Personally, I *loathe* that line, and though there are some very pretty cover versions of the song that use it, I always have to mentally edit them.

I recommend the cover by Daphne Loves Darby.  They got the words slightly wrong in another place, but at least they kept the muddling.
