Mitt Romney tells 533 lies in 30 weeks, Steve Benen documents them

I’ve written about or linked to a great deal here “chronicling Mitt’s mendacity” — to borrow Steven Benen’s phrase.

Mitt Romney says many, many things that are not true. He says this despite being in possession of the correct facts of the matter.

Which is to say that Mitt Romney lies. A lot. He lies more than any other national candidate for office in my lifetime. And I was born before the Nixon administration.

This is documented. Proven. Validated, verified, demonstrated, catalogued and quantified. Mitt Romney lies.

Here are 30 — 30! — of Benen’s weekly “chronicling” posts. These are all backed up and sourced. These are not assertions, interpretations or allegations. These are facts, actual instances.

Over the past 30 weeks, Mitt Romney has told lie after lie after lie: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI, XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXIX, XXX.

Click those links. Read the lists. List after list of lie after lie. Hundreds of them — 533, to be exact, although Benen does not make any claim to providing a comprehensive chronicle.

This is unprecedented. “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers,” Romney’s pollster, Neil Newhouse, said.

This has produced what James Fallows calls the “post-truth” age — a relentlessly dishonest onslaught of brazen falsehoods with which the media and the political system are struggling to cope. What do you do when every article, every “fact-check,” every arbiter denounces a lie and corrects it, but then a politician just keeps repeating it?

It’s remarkable to behold.

One of the weirder aspects of this for me is watching this unfold in the politically conservative culture of my evangelical world. The most partisan evangelical conservatives are also those most likely to rant against “relativism” and to trumpet their status as defenders of “absolute truth.” Those same folks will dismiss this post — and all 30 of Benen’s posts above — as mere partisan attacks without ever bothering to examine the 533 factual instances of Mitt’s mendacity, chronicled.

That’s the only cognitive defense they have, I guess. Jam fingers in ears and shout la-la-la-you’re-being-partisan!

Because, you see, the fact that Mitt Romney said something he knew to be false is a partisan fact. And the fact that he has done this at least 533 times in the past 30 weeks is also partisan.

I suppose the other approach for Romney defenders who cannot bear to face the fact of those 533 facts will be to angrily pore over all of Benen’s lists, reading each one with a lawyerly eye.

Have at it. Please. Cherry-pick. Spin. Split hairs. Hand-wave away whichever lies you wish as mere misdemeanors and not full-fledged felonies against honesty.

But how many of those charges do you think you can get dismissed? 10 percent? 20 percent? Maybe, if you’re that sort of person and you work really hard at it — if you’re willing to get even more pedantic and semantic and technical than even you are usually comfortable with — maybe you could half convince yourself that 50 percent of those lies somehow shouldn’t really count against Romney.

That still leaves more than 260 lies. That still leaves Mitt Romney as a convicted liar, 260 times over. And at that point you’ll have to join your friends with their fingers in their ears.

But you’ll still know.

Because everyone knows. Mitt Romney lies. A lot. That is what he does. That is who he is. And friend or foe, he does not care if you know it.

  • Heknowsandcares

I am glad he is lying. I looked through them and a lot of them WERE true and if he had not called Obama on them, they would have remained true. Because he did, Obama will change his mind and deny them and the “evil”planned will not happen. Even if he doesn’t win, people will be on the alert for the items Romney had pointed out. It works to our freedom and responsibility. If you want them to be lies, and are defending Obama that he didn’t do what was accused he did, then you are on the side of right. If you don’t care whether Obama did those things or not, then you should vote Democratic, because more policies like the ones he is accused of, is what you will get. If you don’t believe Obama is for what he is accused of, then you must believe that we are more united than divided on all those issues and that is a great thing!!! You should take CA for example. No one is stopping them from all sorts of atrocities. We need a Mitt to tell “lies” and call them on it so they will stop and deny it.

Wow, we’ve now descended into total conspiracy nut territory, complete with the usual absence of logic.

It’s going to be a long, troll-infested slog to November 7th. Sigh.

  • AnonymousSam

Saddens me because I really don’t think of this blog as having much to do with democrats specifically. It’s all about policy driven by Christian values, regardless of who they come from — which in itself is fair criticism of Fred, given that he’ll praise the Christian actions of a man who has, at other times, shown himself to be a complete scoundrel.

I’m more concerned with making sure there’s a viable future for all of us than who’s in charge of it and I don’t relish the thought of slap fights with trolls for the next few months either.

    Obama apologized for America

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

    Signed,
A Canadian who has wished the US government wouldn’t embody all the wannabe bully traits too many voters seem to think is the hallmark of how the US should conduct its affairs.

  • Erik Hamilton

@Aunursa: Reading one off a list of 533 doesn’t give you grounds to discuss the list as a whole at all. 300×0 is only accurate for multiplication. A list is additive. If the first is weak, that doesn’t invalidate any of the rest of the list. Each item is judged on its own merits. Now, as for the first one you attacked: an apology is several things: a definition, an action that we as people think of when we hear the word apology, and a political action. The political act is official. One issues an official apology. Without such, a speech is just a speech. As for the definition, Obama didn’t fulfill the definition–he never expressed any regret. That’s not splitting hairs. And beyond the definition is how we as people use the word. When we say someone apologized, then there HAS to be the words “I apologize” or “I regret that I” or “I’m sorry”–there’s no apology without it. If someone comes up to you and says, “I acknowledge that what I did was wrong” that’s no apology. There has to be an acknowledgement of culpability in that act and regret for it. So, it’s a lie to claim it’s an apology. While you may not agree that’s it deserves “four pinnochios” it’s still a lie. To gloss over it yourself–well that’s also a lie. I’m glad you used a couple of nice rationalizations to allow yourself to ignore the cognitive dissonance, but wrong’s wrong. And you’re wrong.

  • Lavander

Jaye, people like you are the reason that Romney continues to do this.

And you’re probably one of those who complains about how terrible politician’s are and our government is. Look no further than the mirror to figure out why.

  • Lavander

True, but isn’t that even worse?

Especially if the lie has been proven false.

  • Beroli

If you went in thinking that the only correct attitude for the President of the United States was, “You want our soldiers to be answerable to anyone outside the country, ever? Screw you,” like Bush the Lesser, then Obama seems very distressingly non-swaggery by comparison.

  • chiron69

How can a “religious” man lie this often, and being such a petty character?
I seriously hope that the american people remember who started USA’s problems (The Iraq/Afghanistan wars, the Wall Street deregulation that led to the financial collapse etc..) All I can say is that it wasn’t the democrats. And the democrats haven’t blocked every proposal in the senate for the past four years, just to make the other side’s leader look “bad”.
God bless America! And the people that tell the truth. ;-)

  • Hawker40

“We must replace the political party that couldn’t fix the country in four years with the political party that broke the country in the first place!”

  • chiron69

And what party blocked the bills in the senate? (A hint: starts with an R.) :-|

  • PJ Evans

You should take CA for example. No one is stopping them from all sorts of atrocities.

Please explain what ‘atrocities’ are going on in CA.
(Provide citations for ALL your assertions, because otherwise they’lll all be filed under ‘nutbar conspiracy theorist’ and you’ll be ignored.)

“We must replace the political party that couldn’t fix the country in

And after Father Benedict Groeschel’s 180 today on whether or not he did in fact say that kids are the ones seducing priests and priests should get more leeway because historically man-boy relationships weren’t seen as a crime, I’m starting to wonder if anyone truly counts on their words being recorded and viewed by millions and saying “no, I said just the opposite of that” doesn’t magically make it so anymore.

I should no longer be surprised by the number of people who do not understand how the internet works, but I still am.

Some days I think that hitting “post” needs to pop up a message that says something like “Once you post this it is never going to go away. Ever. Really. Once you put it on the internet you lose all control over it. People will always be able to find it, even if you delete it. Do you still want to post this? Y/N”

    How remarkably dishonest.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SU3L6O6MNAPXLBIGJGEX5NW5UQ jqb

     How would it do that?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SU3L6O6MNAPXLBIGJGEX5NW5UQ jqb

” not arguing in good faith”

In other words, it’s dishonest. That’s what’s missing from Fred’s ” you’ll have to join your friends with their fingers in their ears” … it’s not JUST that … it’s joining them in LYING. People like aunursa are LIARS.

  • Sunee_jim

Try that with a spouse sometime when an apology is asked for.  Omit the words “I’m” and “sorry” or “I” and “apologize” and see how far that gets you.

Oh, and much like the bible, you kinda have to read on past the part you like if you are going to quote the source (eg. “we hate gays!  Like the bible says!  No, what about slavery, growing my beard and wearing mixed fabrics?”

from your link-”a formal, public statement of regret, such as one issued by a newspaper, government, or other organization:”  None has been made.  Not a one.  So lie.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SU3L6O6MNAPXLBIGJGEX5NW5UQ jqb

” I reckon most politicians misrepresent things rather substantially much

    Obama’s ‘apologies’. ”

That would make you yet another liar.

     That was GWB.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SU3L6O6MNAPXLBIGJGEX5NW5UQ jqb

How about knee-jerk equivalence-makers? I mean really, think about how stupid it is to assume that there’s an equivalent list for Obama. Here’s a clue: your “knee-jerk” liberal friends are already quite critical of Obama and know a lot more about his flaws and errors than you do. If you want to try to make a list of his “whoppers”, consider what right wingers claim are his biggest “lies” … like “He lied about raising middle class taxes!” … because conservative Supreme Court justice John Roberts asserted that the health care mandate falls under Congress’s taxation authority.

  • Lori

For all the folks who think “all politicians lie” is somehow a reasonable, sensible response to the deluge of untruths coming from Romney & Ryan:

Every political campaign consists of some truth, some falsehood, and some bullsh*t. What’s different about Romney-Ryan is that it’s bullsh*t all the way down. Frankfurt is right to say that b.s. is a greater enemy of the truth than is a lie. And by the same token, a b.s. artist in politics is a much graver threat to the Republic than a mere liar.

A liar merely denies the truth he knows to be true; a chronic bullsh*tter has forgotten that the truth even exists.

Note: Kleiman is referencing Harry Frankfurt’s essay “On Bullshit”. If people haven’t read it they really should.

  • AnonymousSam

Please tell me you’re not actually bringing up his birth certificate. We’ve seen it. Seriously, it exists. It has been examined by professional document handlers who verified its authenticity. The “real” birth certificate “proving” he was born in Kenya was proven to be a forgery (and was so fake that I myself was able to verify that it was a forgery even without access to the Australian records whence it had actually derived).

At this point, the only people who have any reason to be bringing it up like it’s a relevant point are flat-Earthers, moon landing deniers and similar sorts who plug their ears and scream loudly to avoid having their tangled world views distorted by petty things like reality.

I call shenanigans. Even right-wing can trolls can’t be this illiterate, can they?

Please let it be shenanigans. That’s better than the possibility that someone this badly educated and this determined to reject evidence – heck, Obama’s birth certificate was made public during the 2008 campaign – is allowed to vote.

How can a “religious” man lie this often, and being such a petty character?

Probably because being religious is no marker of being moral.

I’m pretty sure Romney is religious, and not “religious.”  Could we maybe stop this thing where every time a religious person does something wrong, he is suddenly “religious” and not religious?

  • TuffsNotEnuff

Go back to 1968 for Mitt Romney’s all-time all-star worst-of-litter lying extravaganza. Limbaugh says that “Mitt Romney was not at Chappaquiddick!” For once, a truth. But in 1968 he was driving through Beaulac France and caused a fatal accident.

For details and with an apology for the silly shill comments:

    – foolmoon.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/337209/all/Mitt_Romney_fatal_accident_at_.html

The other driver was not a “drunk priest” named “Albert Marie, age 46″ who was speeding at “120 kph” and swerved out of lane on a “mountain road” to hit the Romney-driven Citroen and kill Mrs. Leola Anderson. None of this holds up except that the other driver was 46 years old.

There was no such person as this “Albert Marie.” The other driver was a revered Roman Catholic Bishop, later president of the Council of Bishops of France — Bishop Jean Vilnet.

Romney’s Big Lie fails in every detail, except getting his age right.

The Romney family, the surviving Andersons, and LDS were targeted with Romney’s lie. LDS was one of the victims, here, not blameworthy.

Getting away with the bad driving that killed Mrs. Anderson ??? That had its effects on Mitt Romney, too. (Ambassador Shriver drove down from Paris to Bazas to check on Mitt for his father George Romney.  Local French authorities made no referral to national police for a criminal investigation.)

  • Bally Balldez

He’s on an ego trip for starts. He is also a rich errand boy for the ruling class. It’s also just something for him to do. Ryan will probably be either his Dick Cheney or Dan Quayle.

Romney is a sociopath so the strains of the presidency will not effect him. Say what you want about Bush but his time in office aged him and took a toll on him. Cheney and the boy’s made him the whipping boy for all their sinister schemes. George W Bush really was as stupid as he seemed.

Romney is a skilled liar who prides himself on being a skilled liar. When he does something outrageous he’ll get a thrill lying his way out of it. Maybe that’s why he lies so much. Romney is a souless creature who is looking forward to getting his own planet and infinite young wives as Mormonism promises.

Romney is like Cheney. He doesn’t feel emotion. Like most sociopaths such as Susan Smith, Dennis Rader, Ted Bundy  and Casey Anthony. Romney is a robot and his biggest challenge will be controlling Lyin Ryan. Ryan is a psycho and a zealot who cannot control his emotion. They both have massive egos.

I doubt is Mitt’s home life is paradise. Mitt picked serial womanizer Clint Eastwood to speak at his CONvention. If he were a good and happy family man like Obama and Biden he’d have picked a real Republican like Chuck Noriss or Gary Senise who are patriots in real life.

  • TuffsNotEnuff

Goebbels was a genius. Utterly mad and a child killer, but effective at propaganda as no one had been before.

These guys are cartoon lemmings. Romney lied about everything from state residence to cheating at taxes to his old 1968 fatal accident at Beaulac France. He thinks them doves ain’t coming back to roost.

All of you can banter, snort, and talk lies between one another, but when you get down to it, all that they are is lies. Obama is not even fit to kiss Romneys shoe, because he is nothing but an imbecile, and everyone that actually believes his crap , isn’t any better. What an utterly bizarre accusation to make.

I hope the kids you were tutoring were more than ten years old, because that’s about the maximum maturity level I’m seeing from that troll.

There is a distinct name for someone with this behavior. They are sociopaths. The Republican Party consists of thousands of lunatics, led by dozens of sociopaths, for the benefit of a handful of rich louts and blackguards. They are the mortal enemies of every sane and honest person in this country, whether those persons know it or not. If this party ever takes full power again they will precipitate exactly the same sort of bloodbath you can find these days in Damascus.

The reason President Obama won the Nobel Peace prize was for his diplomacy. Republicans unable to credit the President for his good works characterized it as an apology. The citizens of other countries have pride. They love their home/country. Some hate us…characterizing us as the ugly American. Ex-President Bush did nothing to ingratiate our country. When citizens of other countries hate us..they fly our planes full of our citizens into our buildings.  The failure to bow to a dignitary of another country would be similar to not shaking a hand when offered..rude and disrespectful. As in Japan, these are traditions. After Romney’s fiasco when on his campaign trail prior to the Olympics in London, there is no doubt he has the ability to irate other countries with a few words. He will be a disaster, as will Ryan, when it comes to foreign relations. There is no doubt Karl Rove is behind the tactics used disrespecting President Obama..and the presidency itself. To dismiss the decision President Obama made as our Commander In Chief to kill our enemy Bin Laden is another example. The “normal” ordinary citizen isn’t buying it.

  • Sgt. Pepper’s Bleeding Heart

When citizens of other countries hate us..they fly our planes full of our citizens into our buildings.

I don’t want to seem to diminish the gravity of that particular attack, but it’s hardly representative of the behaviour of people who hate America. The vast, vast, overwhelmingly vast majority will stick to complaining about American policies and/or customs, and not jumping up and down with glee when their vilage is bombed or their dictator is propped up.
