Chick-fil-A Biblical Family of the Day

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy: “We support biblical families.”

Today’s Chick-fil-A Biblical Family Rule of the Day: Rebellious children (Deuteronomy 21:18-21).

If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father and mother, who does not heed them when they discipline him, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his town at the gate of that place. They shall say to the elders of his town, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.”

Then all the men of the town shall stone him to death.

So you shall purge the evil from your midst; and all Israel will hear, and be afraid.

What if he is rebellious without being a glutton or a drunkard? Should they still say the ritual words?

  • Hexep

I think they’re just supposed to say that regardless of whether or not it’s true. It’s what one says for the aforementioned situation.

This would definitely make shows like The Biggest Loser more interesting.

Did you hear that Chik-fil-A stopped donating to anti-gay groups? http://www.examiner.com/article/chick-fil-a-taxes-reveal-fast-food-chain-no-longer-donates-to-anti-gay-groups Apparently, Cathy’s admittance that he’s a raging bigot kinda hit ‘em in the pocketbook.

Except they didn’t. They’re just not donating to groups explicitly labeled “anti-gay”, but they’re still donating to some groups with anti-gay activities.

This is one of these passages that sounds bad, but I’m pretty sure it almost never actually happened.  “Rebellious” is a vague word, and could be interpreted strictly or loosely.  When it came to applying the death penalty, the Hebrews were very resistant in actual practice.

“This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He supports the Arsenal.”

  • Carstonio

How about a contest for fictional Chick-fil-A Biblical Families of the Day, similar to the Chuck Norris meme? I think all the patriarchs would sound like Pat Conroy fathers.

  • Amaryllis

Because I’m not up to dealing with any serious issues tonight, the Chick-fil-A Poem of the Day features Rebellion Light.

    “Dirty Face”

Where did you get such a dirty face,
    My darling dirty-faced child?

I got it from crawling along in the dirt
And biting two buttons off Jeremy’s shirt.
I got it from chewing the roots of a rose
And digging for clams in the yard with my nose.
I got it from peeking into a dark cave
And painting myself like a Navajo brave.
I got it from playing with coal in the bin
And signing my name in cement with my chin.
I got if from rolling around on the rug
And giving the horrible dog a big hug.
I got it from finding a lost silver mine
And eating sweet blackberries right off the vine.
I got it from ice cream and wrestling and tears
And from having more fun than you’ve had in years.

One thing, that even the inspired God Almighty has no real remedies for the determined rebellious teen. Or in other variants, maybe Abraham wasn’t that reluctant to sacrifice his (teenage) son.
Love to see James Dean as an emblem of this.

New Roy Zimmerman song: I Want a Marriage Like They Had in the Bible. Seemed topical. See what you think.

  • Rusty

Only those without teenagers would think that punishment harsh.

Next morning, the parents might think they had been a mite hasty. Too late.
