The Breastplate of St. Patrick

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,

Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Nice one Fred this is one of the most encouraging hymns I know.
    Thanks for posting.

So, my cousin died today. He was 41. He was one of the greatest friends I ever had in my life. He was a life-long kayaker, mountain climber, and adventurer; I have to laugh at the fact that he died in his sleep instead of in action. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. He will be dearly missed.

I just wanted to shout that to the world.

  • Amaryllis

My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

  • Fusina

Please accept my sympathy. It is never easy to lose a friend.

Master Tungguo asked Zhuangzi, “This thing called the Way — where is it?”

Zhuangzi said, “There is no place it doesn’t exist.”

“Come, you must be more specific!” said Master Tungguo.

    “It is in the ants.”

    “A lowly thing like that?”

“It is in the grass and weeds.”

    “That is even lower!”

“It is in the tiles and potshards.”

“How can it be that low?”

“It is in the piss and shit.”

May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

I am so very sorry for your loss. May you and yours find comfort.

  • I’m so sorry, Hexep. May you and all of his family be comforted. It sounds like he leaves wonderful memories behind him.

  • Presumably, LaHaye & Jenkins think that the line that follows “Christ on my right, Christ on my left” is “volley’d and thunder’d.”

  • When we all know that the next line is really “Here I am, stuck in the middle with you”

  • Lori

I’m so sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing.

Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,

I’m sorry, but all I can think of at this line is Catullus 16 . Hey, no one ever said St. Patrick wasn’t prickly, did they?

  • Trixie_Belden

I’m sorry for your loss, Hexep.

  • I’ve been carrying a copy of Saint Patrick’s Breastplate in my wallet for years. If nothing else, repeating it is a wonderful way to calm and concentrate the mind.

Saint Patrick was a lot more interesting than the semi-mythical snake-chaser that is his pop culture caracature. I can’t find the source, but I’m pretty sure I read once that Patrick was the first person in history known to have written a denunciation of the institution of slavery – not just say that it was unpleasant, but that it was immoral.

  • Amaryllis

@ Anne Geyer: possibly you’re thinking of the Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus?

Which mostly seems to object to Christians selling other captured Christians into slavery in pagan countries rather than to the overall institution itself.

But he does object, and in the very strongest terms Patrick had been a captured slave himself, and presumably knew first-hand how it felt. And one has to sympathize with his outrage:

And so, now you, Coroticus-and your gangsters, rebels all against Christ, now where do you see yourselves? You gave away girls like prizes: not yet women, but baptized. All for some petty temporal gain that will pass in the very next instant.
