My sweet embraceable you

“As Blanche rattled off song titles, LaVey doodled away on two or three of his keyboards at once: ‘Somebody Loves Me,’ ‘Embraceable You,’ even ‘Rhapsody in Blue.’ … He finished his medley with a great flourish and looked up. ‘Gershwin was a good Satanist,’ he said.” [Read more…]

The Satan-selling con-men are boring. Their Satan-buying audience is fascinating.

I read Sarah Zagorski’s article on Zachary King at LifeNew.com and I am, frankly, bored by Zack King. But I am fascinated by Zagorski, and by her bosses at LifeNews.com, and by the huge audience of “pro-lifers” who create the demand-driven market for clichéd con-men like Zack King. King is only telling Zagorski and her audience what they want to hear. And what they want to hear — what they want, they desire, they wish for and hope for — is a horror story. [Read more…]

Back to the ’80s: ‘I Performed Satanic Rituals Inside Abortion Clinics’ says ‘former Satanist’ at LifeNews.com

Huge, if true: “Just after I turned 14, the coven members came to me and said that I was going to be involved in an abortion in about nine months. There was a sex party with all the male members between 12 and 15 and a female member over 18 and her purpose was to get pregnant, and then she was going to have an abortion in nine months.” [Read more…]

Why I wrote the same thing I always do when the Liars for Jesus attacked Planned Parenthood yet again

Wherein I respond to the question of why I have been silent about Operation Rescue’s dishonest attack video by pointing out that I actually wrote quite a bit about it this week. And by pointing out that I’ve been writing quite a bit about this video for years before it was even recorded. [Read more…]

Satanic baby-killers are putting dead babies in Pepsi!

You can learn a lot on the Internet. Today, for example, I learned that Pepsi cola is made with “flavor enhancers” manufactured from the kidney cells of aborted fetuses. That Scary Story was thoroughly debunked several years ago, but it resurfaced this week thanks to a more recent Scary Story based on the latest “secret video” produced by a friend of disgraced activist James O’Keefe. Back to the ’80s, because we never left them (part 2)

Any skeptical questions about the reality of these alleged horrors was reinterpreted — and fiercely condemned — as a defense of those same horrors. Questions such as “How did they have time to fly the children to Mexico?” or “Why are there no records of such a flight?” wouldn’t be answered directly because answering them would threaten the fantasy. Instead, anyone asking such questions would be recast as a defender of Satanic ritual abuse by Mexican soldiers. [Read more…]

The Satanic Panic arose from abortion politics

Rather suddenly — in about a decade — white evangelical politics, identity, piety and dogma were rewritten and recentered around the assertion that a wicked Other was murdering babies. Toward the end of that decade, a con-man comedian became one of the top-selling white evangelical recording artists by concocting grisly horror stories about wicked Others who murdered babies. Toward the end of that decade, a moral panic swept the country, driven by a fear of a shadowy conspiracy of, yes, wicked Others who murdered babies. [Read more…]

The need to believe in something awful

Mike Warnke and Bob Larson are just con-artists who will say whatever they need to say to separate their audience from its money. That much I understand. What I don’t understand is why they’ve had so much success peddling such horrific horror stories about imaginary monsters. Why did so many people love these stories? And even more puzzling, why did so many people desperately wish that such awful things were really true? [Read more…]
