Show Up

Sometimes serving doesn’t mean planning out a big project.  Sometimes service just means being available; showing up.  Go to a place where there might be an opportunity for service–a farmers market, a cooling center, a park.  Be available and ask that God show you how to serve.

A Prayer for Mealtimes

Fast from all food or caloric drinks until 5 PM During your fast, perhaps at the time you would normally eat a meal, write a prayer for your mealtimes.  Try to incorporate thanksgiving for all of the aspects of the meal–the creation, the laborers who brought the meal from the land, those who prepared the [...]

Fully Alive

Irenaeus of Lyon wrote, “For the glory of God is the human person fully alive; and life consists in beholding God.” To be fully alive is to embrace the one who showed us full life–Jesus Christ. Sit in a quiet place and imagine what it would be like to be nearly dead, lying on your [...]

Evening Walk

Take an evening walk, just as the sun is setting if possible.  As you walk, pray through your day to God, telling God each part of it.  Release each part of your day as you pray it.

This is My Body

Begin the week by giving yourself, completely and fully to God.  Lay on the ground, and working from your toes to the top of your head, pray that God will be present in each part of your body.  Pray that those who shake your hand will experience God, pray that those who you listen to [...]

A Rest for Your Labor

Do all that you can to relieve the labor of others.  Don’t eat out, don’t use money, work to reduce the services you use.  Let God’s Sabbath permeate the sphere of your economy.  Rest from your labor and give rest to your labor.

Journal

Sit in a quiet, natural place like a forest or park. Write what comes to your mind, whatever it is. Don’t look back at what you wrote. Discard the pages after you’re finished.

Friday Fast

No food or caloric drinks until 5 PM.  For your sustenance, meditate on 1 Corinthians 12.

Bring to Light

What darkness have you felt in yourself?  Bring it to light, first in prayer to God and then to a brother or sister in Christ.

Wash Dishes

Finding God’s presence in the most mundane tasks can be a challenge, and requires practice.  Today, even if you have a dishwasher, wash dishes by hand and with each dish concentrate on conversing with God, just as if God were sitting there with you in your kitchen.
