John Oliver is Wrong: America Is Incredibly Humanitarian

John Oliver is Wrong: America Is Incredibly Humanitarian November 24, 2015

When I saw the news of the ISIS terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month, I was immediately brought back to the morning of September 11, 2001 when my beloved New York was similarly attacked by Islamic Extremists.  I mourned with the people of Paris, just as I had mourned with my fellow New Yorkers more than a decade ago.

In the wake of the attack on Paris and as I watch news of ISIS’s growing threat every day, I would love to see America and the world responding as New Yorkers did in 2001 – with a steely resolve that we will continue living our lives and that we will do everything in our power to ensure that no other city in America or around the world ever has to face the death and destruction that we did that day.

And with that sense of determination, many Governors, Congressmen, and concerned citizens have begun questioning the Obama administration about the safety measures we have in place to ensure that ISIS terrorists are unable to do what they have already promised they are going to do – sneak into America disguised as Syrian refugees.

But what does the Left say to our request for more information and greater security measures for our nation?  They call us xenophobes and bigots.

Our President reserves his most righteous anger towards Americans asking questions about our security protocols, instead of for the terrorists who are the very definition of evil.  He condescends to us, pretending to hold the moral high ground when the Syrian refugee crisis is infinitely worse because of his failed foreign policy in Syria and the Middle East. He pretends that the fraction of a percent of total Syrian refugees he’s pretending to take in makes him more compassionate when real compassion would have prompted him months ago to actually defeat ISIS as they were carrying out attacks on villages and towns in Africa and the Middle East that make the Paris attacks seem mild. He would use American resources to help establish safe and secure safe havens for the millions of Syrian refugees targeted by ISIS.

But no, instead of being open and honest with the American people and Members of Congress about what his security procedures are regarding Syrian refugees, he lectures at us.

But it was while watching Last Week Tonight this weekend that the rhetoric of the Left surrounding this debate finally pushed me over the edge.  John Oliver’s condescending tone and dramatic over-simplification of the dire issues involved left me stunned.

John said that Americans were being non-humanitarian when we asked our President to make sure that we are protected from the imminent threat of ISIS.  He spent half his monologue immaturely mocking every Republican leader who asked for more information about the Syrian refugee screening process.  And he equated our Founding Fathers with ISIS terrorists.  In short- his monologue showed his complete inability to think about these issues from a non-partisan and nuanced perspective.

John, stop preaching at the Republicans and start realizing that the one man who can clear this up and actually help all these refugees is President Obama. And he simply fails to do it.

President Obama is the one individual who can clear the air. And yet when his White House gave a briefing to Democrats before the House vote last week, he actually lost support within his own party. And people wonder why we’re so skeptical about the security protocols for these refugees.

And on side note, I am so sick of rich people like John Oliver lecturing all of us about helping Syrian refugees, when there will be no Syrian refugees moving into their neighborhoods. How many refugees will they take the time to get to know personally and help? Zero. Just as they are currently doing in England, refugees will be resettled in America’s poorest neighborhoods, which are Petrie dishes for Islamic extremists to grow and recruit.

Give me a break. This is yet another example of progressives wanting to feel as self-righteous as possible while actually doing as little as possible to actually sacrifice anything themselves.

I am proud to be an American, because regardless of what John Oliver says, we truly are one of the most humanitarian nations in the world.  I am thankful for our leaders who are taking the time to ensure that our country is secure from the threat of ISIS right now, so that we can continue to be a “shining city on a hill” for centuries to come.
