Louisiana is about to expand their hate crimes law, and guess who’s mad about it? May 26, 2016

Louisiana is expanding its hate crime law to include protecting police officers and you won’t believe who’s upset about it.

Then again, it’s totally believable.

It’s known informally as the “Blue Lives Matter” bill — terminology that will set any social justice warrior’s teeth on edge — and was authored by State Rep. Lance Harris (R) to help protect law enforcement officers, firefighters, and medical emergency personnel from being targeted for crimes.

“There is a concerted effort in some areas to terrorize and attack police and I think this will go forward and stop that,” Harris said about his Bill, HB 953. “In the news, you see a lot of people terrorizing and threatening police officers on social media just due to the fact that they are policemen. Now, this (new law) protects police and first responders under the hate-crime law.”

The execution of Texas Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, who was shot 15 times while he pumped gas into his patrol car last August, was the inspiration for this legislation. Harris said this particular crime made it clear that Goforth was targeted because he was a cop.

But it shouldn’t be surprising that Black Lives Matter activists are quite upset with police officers being lumped in with minorities when being protected from hate crimes. One of them, a New Orleans native, took to Twitter to complain, hashtagging his posts with “Bam Bluezled.” How charming:

Also on board, and sharing similar disgust, is the Anti-Defamation League. Regional director Allison Padilla-Goodman also believes police are already over protected:

“We are not happy that it is being signed into law. The bill confuses the purpose of the Hate Crimes Act and weakens its impact by adding more categories of people, who are already better protected under other laws.

“Hate Crimes are designed to protect people’s most precious identity categories … like race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, and gender identity. Proving the bias intent is very different for these categories than it is for the bias intent of a crime against a law enforcement officer.”

The signing of this bill would make Louisiana the first state in the country to have a hate crime law that also protects public servants. Here is the amended reading of the legislation:

“It shall be unlawful for any person to select the victim of the following offenses against person and property because of actual or perceived race, age, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, or ancestry of that person or the owner or occupant of that property or because of actual or perceived membership or service in, or employment with, an organization, or because of actual or perceived employment as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services personnel.”

There’s nothing more threatening to the Black Lives Matter crowd than when someone stands up for our boys in blue.
