The Little Sisters of the Poor Beat the Obama Administration at the Supreme Court

The Little Sisters of the Poor Beat the Obama Administration at the Supreme Court May 31, 2016

Recently, the Supreme Court handed down a major win for religious liberty when it ruled that the Little Sister of the Poor and other religious organizations would not have to violate their faith by following the Obama Administration’s HHS mandate regarding abortion pills, but instead they would have to work out a compromise with religious groups.

Many are claiming that the Supreme Court punted by asking the two sides to compromise, but Constitutional attorney David French at National Review explains why this is a win for religious freedom in America:

There’s no doubt that it would have been preferable to win the case on the merits, but this is not the outcome the Obama administration hoped for, and it’s better than the 4-4 tie that most people predicted. A tie would have let stand rulings against the Little Sisters and most of the other religious organizations challenging the mandate. This outcome, by contrast, provides a judicial roadmap for a national victory for religious liberty. Congratulations to the Little Sisters, their fellow petitioners, and their capable counsel. Today is a good day for America’s first freedom.

As the federal government continues to take more and more of our freedoms away, I am so encouraged that this courageous group of nuns stood firm on their beliefs and said enough is enough.  This is a group of women who have devoted their entire lives to serving poor elderly people!  They aren’t asking for much.  Just their God-given rights to practice their religion and live out their faith.

I’m glad that at least for today the Supreme Court reminded the Obama Administration just how important these fundamental freedoms are.
