Police officers refused to guard WNBA players wearing “Black Lives Matter” jerseys July 25, 2016

The WNBA players on the Minnesota Lynx team learned the hard way that protesting police officers will leave them without security at home games.

HotAir linked to a report from the Star Tribune:

Four off-duty Minneapolis police officers working the Minnesota Lynx game at Target Center on Saturday night walked off the job after the players held a news conference denouncing racial profiling, then wore Black Lives Matter pregame warm-up jerseys.

Not only that, these same officers have removed themselves from the list for any future games, as well. Others are expected to do the same.

During the press conference, a team member said, “In the wake of the tragedies that have continued to plague our society, we have decided it’s important to take a stand and raise our voices. Racial profiling is a problem. Senseless violence is a problem. The divide is way too big between our communities and those who have vowed to protect and serve us.”

But by wearing the in-your-face jerseys, the women bridged no gap and only offended the officers who volunteered to protect them. Their “stand” was a slap in the face to officers who are giving up their home time to be at the games and ensure the safety of the team. These are very divisive actions from pro-athletes who would no doubt lecture anyone about the virtue of working together.

There’s no “I” in team and apparently no class in the Lynx.

And then there’s this from another pro-athlete, the Cleveland Browns’ Isaiah Crowell, who wins for the most vicious social media attack on police in this now-deleted post:

Crowell wasted everyone’s time issuing an “it was an extremely poor decision” apology, followed by the lame response from the Browns expressing their “disappointment” in the player’s post.

Are there any role models left in sports?
