Gandalf the Grey

Great image of Gandalf the Grey. The archetypal patriarch, hermit, wizard, prophet, holy man.

He could be Elijah, Merlin, St Jerome, St Benedict, St Bruno, or Fr. Zossima of The Brothers Karamozov.

  • Anita Moore

It’s too bad Sir Alec Guiness didn’t live to portray Gandalf: I always imagined Gandalf sounding and looking like him.Plus, Sir Alec Guiness was a devout Catholic (along with his formerly Jewish wife, who converted with him in the 1950s)!

  • Fr. Dwight Longenecker

At least he got to do Obi Wan– another wise old mentor figure.Guiness’ conversion story in his autobiography is one of the most concise and moving I’ve read.

  • Jeffrey Smith

Never thought of that! He’d have been perfect.

Zossima is one of my favorites in literature.
