Old Baldy is signing off for a week. I’m off to El Salvador with six kids from St Joseph’s Catholic School on a mission trip.
We’re working in a community called CIDECO. The community consists of modest housing, a clinic, school, church and market square. The founders provide the whole package for the poorest of the poor to help them break the cycle of poverty. Those who are poor are invited to apply for housing. They have to be married and stay married. The men and women are helped to find jobs and keep jobs. They are given training and support along every step of the way. Meanwhile the children are in school. This work is new and very professional and very exciting.
It’s also fully Catholic. Supported by the Papal Foundation, and staffed by the Legionaires of Christ, the families are renewed in their Catholic faith and supported not only in their quest to get out of poverty, but to get to heaven.
I’ll take my camera and post more about CIDECO on my return.
