Heaven in You

An observation from Dr.Francis Beckwith, the former Evangelical scholar who recently reverted to the Catholic faith.

“Protestants are concerned about how to get you to heaven,” he said. “Catholics are more concerned about getting heaven into you.”

Well said. It reminds me of a similar quote from George Weigel at the recent Eucharistic Congress here in Atlanta. I paraphrase:”Protestants are concerned with the individual searching for God. Catholics are concerned with God searching for the indivdual.”

Or the comment of a Catholic lady ot a Baptist friend while viewing:the Sacred Heart of Jesus:”You Baptists like to speak of asking Jesus into your heart. We Catholics ask Jesus to take us into his heart.”

When I found out that the Catholic Church teaches that by grace we are perfectable – that God not only wants to save us for heaven, but also for NOW, I gladly chucked that dismal doctrine of Total Depravity out the door. The Catholic Gospel is the most hopeful, joyful, COMPLETE message around.
