Anglo Islam

The ABC (Archbishop of Canterbury) thinks having Islamic Sharia law in Britain is not such a bad thing. Read the report here.

I’m not good with the graphics thing, but can anybody doctor this photograph? He’s got the beard, just add a turban or something…

  • jeron

    He has lost his mind.

Now I get why he’s been cultivating that beard: he’s aiming at becoming the Sheik of Canterbury!

You beat me to this article! For a couple of years now, whatever goofy thing I can imagine about the ECUSA or CofE is surpassed the next day by some stupefying new reality.BTW, at Ash Wednesday Mass you reminded me and Mrs. Kollwitz of Bruce Willis….although you don’t resemble him at all in today’s spectacular photo.

Jesus expected his followers to render unto Caesar…an unreasonable command as far as ++Williams is concerned.

As one who exited the ECUSA in 2003,nothing can surprise me too much any more, but it still saddens me. There are a number of people I truly love still hanging on by their fingernails in the Episcopal Church, but my husband and I could not in good conscience do so.

Surely a man of his intellectual ability should come out with something more intelligent than this…

Intellectual ability Oliver? Am I missing something?

I understand everyone’s criticism of this man, but when one’s beard and eyebrows excite such awe and wonderment in all who happen to behold them or become ensnared in their aura, I must respectfully refrain from joining in.

Whatever you want to say about Rowan Williams, he is a bright man. Just because you disagree with someone’s outlook, does not mean you have to discount his or her intelligence. When that happens, we give the impression that all those who agree with us are the smart ones and our interlocutors are simply dumb. What seems to be lacking in Rowan Williams’ case is the proper theological-philosophical presuppositions, not intelligence.

+++Williams’ theological and cultural capitulation prove that, indeed, flying planes into buildings works. The way you beat a bully is by punching back. Hard. And harder again, if necessary.

    You go John!

Sadly this post and most of the resulting comments reflect much of what has been written on the subject of Archbishop Rowan Williams’ lecture yesterday evening but little of what the Archbishop actually says. The reason for this is that few of those who have rushed out comments seem to have taken the trouble to read the text. Contrary to the prevailing view that everything Dr Williams writes is obscure, what he writes here is not ‘difficult’ although the issues he deals with may be complex. But it does take a couple of hours to get through and the media doesn’t take kindly to any idea that takes longer than fifteen seconds to articulate. What I find really worrying is the shere mindlessness of much of the name calling that passes for comment. You may disagree with the conclusions Dr Williams reaches – as it happens, I do – but to yell ‘ya boo’ does nothing to advance the cause of the contrary argument.

    I couldn’t resist but oblige…

Matt Doyle,Excellent!I thought the Archbishop reminded a little of Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager actually.

I think this is another reason to wish that Richard III had defeated Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field. We’d have been spared England’s “Stalinist Period” –i.e., the reign of Henry VII, and perhaps the whole nonsense of the Church of England — and my paternal grandparents would be buried together instead of in two different cemeteries. My Lord of Cantuar is flippin’ barmy, and gormless enough to show it in public. He needs prayers, and so does England. St. George, St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, St. Edmund Campion, step up to the plate — your prayers are direly needed!

So the name calling continues. But in among it are one or two are willing to buck the lynch mob and actually address what the Archbishop has said. The best I’ve read so far is Deborah Orr’s piece in today (Saturday’s) ‘Independent’ – not usually my preferred reading – which can be accessed on line via http://independent.co.uk . Ironically the same paper’s leading article still follows the howling mob.

Here’s a take from a Protestant, somewhat associated with the Anglican Church. If someone is able to doctor that photo, I’d love to get a copy to put on my blog.

“The way you beat a bully is by punching back. Hard. And harder again, if necessary.”The way you witness to a bully, however, is by turning the other cheek. You know, Imitatio Christi.

Stanley, I’m more than happy to witness to a bully. Just as soon as I’m certain he’s not going to murder everyone I love and hold dear first.

  • Anna

Stanley, If patient, non-violent witnessing was all that were necessary, then there would be a whole lot more Christians in the Muslim dominated countries right now.
