Hats and Knives

Greenville has a splendid shop called ‘Hats and Knives’. It is run by some very nice genuine Southern folks, and has been there for years. They have hats and knives of every sort imaginable. Unfortunately there was no Saturno on hand nor did the very nice Southern hat lady know what a ‘saturno’ was. Alas, I shall have to wait for a visit to Rome. Pictured above is your blogger with visiting English, father in law Harry Saunders. Couldn’t resist a fez. Just the thing to wear while reading in front of the fire.

Traveling around town today we passed the ‘God Save America Tire Store’ and when the English found this amusing I asked them how this was different from singing ‘God Save the Queen’ and having her royal crest slapped on jars of marmalade. Only a matter of taste I think–and the fact that tires (or tyres) are somehow so much more American than marmalade.

"her royal crest slapped on jars of marmalade" Obviously the Queen likes marmalade, which pleases the Alderney, but the King, not being a fussy man, just likes a bit of butter to his bread.

I particularly like that the name of the store leaves nothing to the imagination. Sounds like just the place for the knife wielding serial killer who has a hat fetish.

Speaking of fezzes (fexi? fezzi?), for most of my life I thought marmalade came from Turkey. Conventional wisdom says otherwise.

The photograph has a very pythonesque(monty) feel to it. Almost insane. I love it.Quite brilliant in the run up to Christmas, which is always far too hectic. To me, it is reflective of men having decided to rebel against the pressure of shopping and taking a few moments out to do something manlike. A kind of "Let's ditch the wives, and find us some knives!"Then deciding to dress up in hats instead…………You're a classic English looney Father, whether you like it or not. Too much of your youth spent in Oxford, no doubt.

Yes Father, America has not figured out how to make proper marmalade. Pace Smuckers, American marmalade is too sweet, lacks bite and doesn’t have enough rind to it. I have attempted to make my own from scratch but with limited success. Then my sister in Ireland solved the problem. Over there they sell cans of the basic ingredients, to which you just add sugar and water – and voilà: ‘authentic’ marmalade!Of course, I also add a little Jameson’s to it and produce a respectable imitation of “Old Time Irish Marmalade”… P.S. – love the hats!

This fez business is what can happen when a Longenecker starts hanging out with the English.

That's a nice straw fedora above your head, Father. If they know their haberdashery at Hats and Knives, you should treasure that store, and seek out their advice. A good haberdasher is to hats as a good tailor is to suits.

Oh, Dear, I can see it now, in a headline in (Insert any RAD TRAD publication), "Definitive Proof That Fr. Dwight Longenecker is secretly a Free Mason". Don't trust those converts, they are really a Mason conspiracy to infiltrate the Church….BBWWWAAAHHHAAA!!!
