Another charming, hand-drawn film from a CalArts/Gobelins student. (I’m starting to sound like a bit of a broken record, I know. But if this is what a broken record looks/sounds like, then I’m all for them.)

Some very nice little touches in this one, from the way the characters have lines that run down the middle of their faces (like the sorts of “How-To-Draw” instructions that I see all the time and still can’t follow), the way the girl’s eyes are sometimes entirely blank (especially when the little light turns on), and the little tubular bells that are used for punctuation. (Also, I want a steam-punky lamp that works like a projector.)

I really like the theme(s), too. Rejecting her things and replacing them with people. Going beyond her comfort level. The light vs. darkness. (That last one, in particular, is handled in a charming way. Could have been a very unsettling short, but the way its creator going about things makes it charming, instead.)

The story of an anemic little recluse of a girl who makes a friend at the expense of her ceiling.
