There is always a but…

A famous atheist has decided that there is a God, after all. BUT, of course, “I’m thinking of a God very different from the God of the Christian and far and away from the God of Islam, because both are depicted as omnipotent Oriental despots, cosmic Saddam Husseins…”

Ah, yes. There is a God, but not that Christian God (I’m surprised he didn’t mention the God of Moses) I daren’t move too briskly away from my lifelong PC stances. Get too conventional, too quickly, there might be a reaction.

That’s okay. It’s Christmas. Baby steps will do, especially at Christmas.

Jonah Goldberg takes Kevin Drum to task. Kevin is harrumphing that of COURSE Democrats believe terrorism is a danger, “Sure, 9/11 was a wake-up call,”…BUT…(here Jonah paraphrases Kevin) since we haven’t been attacked as badly at home since, there’s no reason to conclude that 9/11 was our generation’s Pearl Harbor.

Ah, yes. If only President Bush hadn’t done his job so well, if only we’d been attacked a few more times, then the Democrats might actually believe there was something to be concerned about! I said it before the election and I’ll say it again: President Bush has done his job so well, that the Democrats don’t even worry about being attacked again. They give him no credit for it, though. Instead they sniff that it really mustn’t be much of a threat.

I wonder how the people in Bali, in Turkey, in Spain would feel about that.

Julie Burchill, writing in the UK Times Online, has discovered that she loves Israel, and is disappointed with her nation, Britain, for its slow slouch into anti-semitism. Good for Julie, I applaud her revelation. BUT…she (perhaps all unconsciously) falls right into her own prejudices:

Everything from the clothes you need to pack — not many, nothing warm, because it’s always hot and always informal unless you plan to hang around some neurotic, misogynistic Muslim/Catholic “ Holy Place”, in which case, COVER YOURSELF YOU FILTHY DAUGHTER OF A WHORE!

Ah, yes. Those so-called “holy places” and the unreasonable expectation that people might approach them in modest attire. How wicked, how intolerant! I’m happy for Julie, as I say…but the secularist mindset that proclaims “all these rules are silly and oppressive” certainly has been deeply ingrained. Sigh.

Finally, the Taliban, yes, the Taliban, wants to lay down their arms and talk peace with the US. Staggering. Unimaginable only three years ago. But…Bush is an idiot and the Afghan Miracle is really just a big yawn, innit?

Can you imagine the hosannas in the press, right now, today, over the new Afghan Government, and over the fact that our nation has not been attacked since 9/11 if only the president had a D after his name?

BUT…he doesn’t, so nothing is good, everything is bad. Every single thing.

I’d like a Guinness, right about now. It’s okay to enjoy a Guinness with lunch, isn’t it? For lunch, maybe? :-)
