Yes! Voigt and Terfel as Brünnhilde and Wotan!

The NY Metropolitan Opera, 2010-11 season.

“…some of the cast for the Met’s new production of Wagner’s four-opera “Ring” cycle that Robert Lepage will direct starting in the 2010-11 season. The soprano Deborah Voigt will sing Brünnhilde, a role her loyal fans have been hoping she would take on. And the tenor Ben Heppner, who, like some fine Tristans before him, had drawn the line at tackling the vocally punishing role of Siegfried, has agreed to sing it for the Met. Finally, the powerhouse bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will be Wotan.”

Yyyyyes! This is the baby! Fausta, we have to get together and see this one!

It’s not my absolute favorite, but to hear Voigt sing Brünnhilde against Bryn’s Wotan? Gimmee! I’d love to see her do Tosca to his Scarpia, too!

I’ll tell you what, folks, if I’m still blogging by then, I’ll organize the get-together…but you have to attend the whole cycle! ;-)

Perhaps Gayle & I can make the drive together since I live in the People’s Republic of Maryland, not all that far from where she’ll be in Virginia.

BTW, do you know the definition of a Wagner opera? That’s when you look at your watch after 3 hours and realize that only 20 minutes have gone by! (As told to me by a tenor friend.) Maybe it would be better with Bryn singing!!!

Anchoress, I rarely if ever attend live performances, but on your recommendation I’ll purchase the recording.

My first impulse was to tell you not to even think about stopping blogging. My second thought is to tell you to blog as long as you enjoy it, and to hope that you enjoy it for a long long time.

As you blog about the Cycle, I hope some Photoshop-literate person can generate a version of your masthead with the anonymous Anchoress in a horned helmet. Hoyta ho!

Sounds like a dream cast, but I’d worry about Terfel singing heavy Wagner roles, singers that can sing Mozart that well should probably stay in that neighborhood. Too many excellent singers have hurt their voices tackling Wagner.

    Dear Anchoress,

At the end of 2006, your Terfel post sent me to Amazon.com, where I happily spent far too much time listening to far-too-small samples. One album (Under the Stars) had him singing Broadway songs, including “Not While I’m Around”.

What I would love to hear, and travel far to see, is Bryn in the title role of “Sweeney Todd”. Just to imagine him singing “Pretty Women” makes me melt and shiver at the same time.

    Sigh……
