I know I’ve been quiet…

I think when we get past my MIL’s 70th birthday party on Sunday…

Meanwhile, my brain is fried right now and so I’m looking at beautiful saris. As I wrote a while back, when my brain is fried, “…I go here and look at Saris.

Because I can never look at beautiful fabric enough…my heart hungers for beauty. And I don’t especially want to wear beautiful clothes – that’s too much trouble – but I want to look at beautiful clothes and fabrics. As I’ve said before, I’d love to own Katharine Hepburn’s black, slit-back, dolman-sleeved formal gown from “Holiday” or Grace Kelly’s crinolined-out cocktail dress in Rear Window…not to wear them…I just want to put the dresses on a form and look at them.

So, now you know…I’m even weirder than you thought.

Not much has changed.

I remember reading the original post and just laughing to myself. Those two outfits are favorites, along with pretty much anything Audrey Hepburn ever wore. I go catatonic in fabric stores. I learned to knit a little while ago, and now I’ve become obsessed with yarn, especially anything funky/bumpy/fuzzy/shiny.

    I am such a magpie.

Oh, I sympathize. I learned to knit last winter and I too spend way too much time looking at yarns and coveting. But so far I’ve kept my expenditures reasonable.

Funny about the “magpie” remark. Last night my son Buster, annoyed because I was not attending to one subject before bringing up another, said, “your brain just leaps out at any shiny object, doesn’t it?”

I laughed for five minutes…because he was so right.

That sari certainly is beautiful. Americans could dress in gorgeous clothing like that, too, but don’t. I suppose we go for comfort most of the time these days. Running in a long sari wouldn’t be very easy.

I’m a magpie like the two of you. Pretty, shiny, and red, especially, are attractive. I just got an e-mail this morning with this story about some birds, not magpies though, being attracted to some shining articles: http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/carwash.asp

And I don’t especially want to wear beautiful clothes
I do – the question is finding them at a price I can afford.
But beautiful fabric is always wonderful to look at, isn’t it?

I used to wander around Liberty’s when we had the fortune to live in London. I don’t sew and am not really interested in clothes all that much. But the fabrics, oh you could spend hours and hours …. I understand the fascination completely

I think the best and most expensive outfit I have ever owned or worn is the one I wore at my daughter’s wedding. There’s something to be said about expensive clothing. It feels a whole lot better than what I get at Wal-Mart!

I don’t sew but I’ve always loved to look at and touch different fabrics in stores. It’s a feast for the eyes!
    .
The dress I’d like to own is the Valentino dress that Julia Roberts wore at the Oscars several years ago when she presented Denzil Washington (another feast for the eyes–and ears!)with the Best Actor Award.

The vintage one? Black with white straps? I remember that one – it was stunning.

During his Christmas visit home, my college-age son became exasperated with me and yelled, “You have the attention span of a goldfish!” Sad. True. Sad.

I’m definitely no ClothesHorse. I imagine that someone could dress me to look presentable- i just can’t seem to. Or, really care to.

I love fabrics in the form of linens- the softest looking blankets, comforters, amazing quilts, sheets- towels. Anything like that. I imagine our beds draped in the finest stuff; not hand-me-downs. W/expensive bedskirts and shams and all that good stuff. I have magazines worn, torn and drooled upon(ok, not really :))

And pillows??? The most expensive are what i pine for. Just one good pillow would make my sleep like that of the angels, i imagine.

You know, clothes do make the man. I remember once during my lunch hour then Vice President GHW Bush and Barbara came to town. We had an overstreet crosswalk and could look down where they were since no one could go out on the street and see them. (sharpshooters and all)

When he got out of his car I could immediately tell he had on an expensive suit even from a couple of stories above him. It just showed and he looked very natural in it. It wasn’t the kind of suit our managers wore, but something that was custom-made.

Barbara then got out and was wearing a blue polka-dot dress that was probably just as classy as his suit but looked like something I would wear to work. Very practical and not too flashy, although I was a bit young for polka dots then. :)

I’d love to have a classic Chanel suit. But when it comes to clothes, I’m thinking lavish. When someone develops a practical time machine, I’m going back and getting a Worth gown. Then I’m going to cover myself with jewels and go to a state dinner with the Queen – Victoria that is.

I’d love to own the dress Tina Fey wore to the Golden Globes – couldn’t get my plus-sized self into it, mind you, but I COULD hang it on the bedroom door and smile at it every night before sleep – just as I smile at my two cats, Tim and Sam! It would be another pet – one I wouldn’t have to feed, water or potty!

RE#11–Yes, OS, that’s the one! Hilary Swank’s dress (#10 in the same link) is also a very classy dress I wouldn’t mind owning. I like the fact its “sex appeal” wasn’t obvious until Ms. Swank walked away. ;)
