Chesterton on McCain & Obama

Yes – the fat man speaks from the grave and sums up our two candidates:

“There are two kinds of peacemakers in the modern world; and they are both, though in various ways, a nuisance. The first peacemaker is the man who goes about saying that he agrees with everybody. He confuses everybody. The second peacemaker is the man who goes about saying that everybody agrees with him. He enrages everybody. Between the two of them they produce a hundred times more disputes and distractions than we poor pugnacious people would ever have thought of in our lives.” (G.K. Chesterton, Illustrated London News 3-3-06)

I guess I am confused. Which description decibes McCain?

  • TheAnchoress

The one that doesn’t describe Obama!

It’s not for me to tell you; you decide for yourself which is which.

“The first peacemaker is the man who goes about saying that he agrees with everybody. He confuses everybody.”

Well that seems like Obama in a way and not very McCain

“The second peacemaker is the man who goes about saying that everybody agrees with him. He enrages everybody”

Well that doesnt seem to be like McCain either

McCain strikes me as not caring if people agree with him or not lol

The only one to rival Chesterton for great quotes: Abba Eban. A few years ago, I attended a lecture at Columbia in which an Arab poli sci professor remarked that Abba Eban inflicted more damage on the Arab world after the Six Day War than the Israelis were able to inflict during the war.

    A sampling of Eban-isms:

A consensus means that everyone agrees to say collectively what no one believes individually.

A statesman who keeps his ear permanently glued to the ground will have neither elegance of posture nor flexibility of movement.

History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives.

(On the Six Day War)I think that this is the first war in history that on the morrow the victors sued for peace and the vanquished called for unconditional surrender.

If Algeria introduced a resolution declaring that the earth was flat and that Israel had flattened it, it would pass by a vote of 164 to 13 with 26 abstentions.

You can’t achieve anything without getting in someone’s way.

Lest Arab governments be tempted out of sheer routine to rush into impulsive rejection, let me suggest that tragedy is not what men suffer but what they miss.

IsUSsportsfan: McCain is the guy who goes around saying that everyone agrees with him.

Great job, Anchoress. I would have laughed except that this is so true it hurts.
