I don’t think Betty Butterfield is an acquired taste — I think you either find her funny right away, or just turn away in disgust and bafflement, and that’s that. Since Betty doesn’t explain herself, I won’t, either, but here are a few of my favorite clips. (These are not for kids!!)
Betty does a whole series on visiting churches, and I think the Catholics come out looking the best. Here she is on her visit to St. Assisi Francentine:
Visiting a Unitarian Church:
I guess I just feel on the inside the way Betty looks, talks, and thinks, and getting older just means learning to hide my Inner Betty better. Oh, lord . . .

I am going out today to get a root canal and not looking forward to it so when I played this I got such a chuckle out of Betty.
She says it as she sees it and she was so funny!
I guess I have an Inner Betty too. If I’m not careful, I’m going to spend the rest of the day watching these videos. Talk about LOL!!!
The rest of you must have better hearing than I do; I listened to the “Unitarian” bit and couldn’t understand half of what she was saying. More than half, in fact.
And is “Betty” actually a woman, or a guy in drag?
I’m about to be uncharitable, but I can’t watch a drag queen like that, that was 3 seconds and I’m out.
There is no question that individual was born with male genitalia.
Betty is a guy in drag. More than that, I don’t really know.
That was pretty darn funny.
Betty’s mannerisms remind me of my Mom. *sigh*
I think Betty’s best one is where she visits the ” ‘Piscopalians”.
what?! that’s awesome
Not 100% sure, Anne B, but my first impression was “Guy in Drag”
Yeah, it’s a comedy routine, a schtick, not intended to deceive you into thinking that Betty is a woman.
That is just…ugly. I guess I’m so used to coming to the anchoress’ website to see stuff that is inspiring and beautiful, to be hit upside the head with this….sickening.
BB,
I’m pretty damn sure that Betty is Episcopalian. (it takes one to know one)
–Still waiting on that Ordinariate
At first Betty Butterfield shook me up a little. But after initial bewilderment, I laughed myself out of a very blue place. In fact I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard — Simcha, I love you for that. If that’s being “sickening,” keep it up please.
Having grown in a small Texas town loaded with protestant Christians, I have known Betty Butterfield since I was in pre-school. Great discovery, Simcha. Thanks!
As a Catholic who was raised in the Unitarian Church, I found this amazingly right on and really really funny! There is no disrespect meant. It just takes the ability to laugh at oneself (a sign of maturity, right?) Thanks for posting this.
Coming from the south, I’ve met Betty about 400 times. I loved her.
You know, I think about Betty Butterfield as a sort of counterpoint to that old Dana Carvey Church Lady character (which reminds me that the guy-in-drag thing is nothing new. It’s pretty much as old as drama). I have known many, many church ladies in my life, and none of them were really like that Dana Carvey character. But this guy who does Betty has really seriously nailed Unchurched Lady.
