Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Shot in AZ, UPDATING

Terrible news breaking:

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, an eyewitness reported Saturday. [She is said to be in critical condition at 2:54 PM - admin]

Giffords, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting. At least five other people, including members of her staff, were hurt, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

Her condition is not known, and it appears 11 18 others have been injured.

Needless to say, prayers for all concerned.

It is appalling to note that some on the social media circuits are already letting the conspiracy theories fly according to their agendas – some on the left are already tweeting about Sarah Palin and gun imagery, others are countering with this and some are not beneath bringing the full-crazy and wondering if this was done purposely to blame Palin.

Not the time, folks! It’s kind of disgusting when you hear someone is shot and the first thing you do is try to figure out how to fit the terrible news to your political worldview. Blame the gunman.

Hey, if you have to go scrub your site of incendiary rhetoric when something tragic like this happens, then you need to reconsider your rhetoric, period.

I do wish the CNN anchor would learn how to pronounce her name. Can he not figure out Gabrielle? Giffords is the only member of congress married to an active member of the military, astronaut Mark Kelly; they have two children.

Running updates:

Hot Air will be updating too. Reports say there were no known threats to the congresswoman; the shooter is in custody. Four are confirmed dead, a child among them.

Instapundit also updating with links

Big Government’s Dana Loesch calls Giffords in a tweet: “Giffords was a “moderate Dem who fought hard to secure the border.” She fought hard for re-election and CNN’s Dana Bash mentions her recent excitement of attending Christmas mass at St. Peters.

Bash notes that Giffords’ AZ office was vandalized during the healthcare debate.

2:09 PM – NPR is reporting that Giffords is dead? They appear to have jumped too soon

Confirmed; as many as six now dead. That total may yet rise. Giffords was reportedly shot at point-blank range. Only 40 years of age.

Horrible. As many as six now dead. That total may yet rise. Giffords was reportedly shot at point-blank range. Only 40 years of age.

HOLD ON: another report that Giffords is still in surgery?

A grotesque addendum: We have no idea who this shooter is, or what possible motive might be behind the shooting but some cannot wait to blame political opponents. The gunman shouted something before he began to shoot. Can we find out what that is before we assume anything?

2:46: Reports still conflicting as to Giffords’ status. Gawker has eyewitness account.

Speaker Boehner: “I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff. An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”

The Politicization of tragedy

Livestream AZ reporting

3:35 PM: AZ State Senator Linda Lopez says Giffords has made it through surgery.

3:47 PM Federal Judge John M. Roll was gravely injured; nominated to federal bench in 1991 by Pres. George H. W. Bush.

NPR: Barring Information on Motive of Gunman, Speculation helps No One. That’s for sure.

Word is that the gunman is a 22 year-old white male, Jared Laughner; that’s all that is currently known.

Doctors confirm one death, a 9-year old girl. Judge Roll has also now died. Awful.

Hot Air has screencaps from shooter’s YouTube Channel.

I will end this post here, with prayers for all of the victims and their families, and for the president and the nation, too.

I quit Facebook yesterday after I was attacked by a distant family member over a link I added to the horrific news about the shooting in Arizona. I mentioned in the link to the attack that there have always been crazies and wrote about the murder of my great Uncle in California in the fifties.

My great Uncle was a city official who was murdered by an immigrant from the Middle East who was upset that his water was turned off. I know yesterday was a very emotional day for everyone who has an ounce of compassion in them but this family member and his wife were attacking every conservative friend or family member simply because they knew them to be conservatives and so believed they must be guilty of the attack on Rep. Giffords.

It was an unreal day in many ways.
