Baby Screaming After Gosnell Abortion: only of “local” interest

There is a saying in the news industry: “if it bleeds, it leads…”

But not always.

Perhaps the saying should be changed to, “if it bleeds and is politically expedient it leads, otherwise, it gets buried.

For instance, you might remember the story of Kermit Gosnell, the Pennsylvania abortionist who was charged with killing at least one women and multiple (perhaps hundreds) of late-term babies in his “practice. Gosnell performed late-term abortions, marveling once that a baby was “so big, he could walk with me to the bus” before he used scissors to snip its spinal cord. Sometimes, he would sever the feet to keep around the office, like trophies.

The Gosnell story is one the press hates. They’ve barely reported on it, at all; within days of its breaking, an online search would produce blogs talking about the horror, but not mainstream media outlets; they do not find this sort of blood lead-worthy:

An unlicensed medical school graduate delivered graphic testimony about the chaos at a Philadelphia clinic where he helped perform late-term abortions.

Stephen Massof described how he snipped the spinal cords of babies, calling it, “literally a beheading. It is separating the brain from the body.” He testified that at times, when women were given medicine to speed up their deliveries, “it would rain fetuses. Fetuses and blood all over the place.”

Peggy Noonan once interrupted a panel discussion to marvel at the lack of coverage of this story, and it’s not terribly surprising that, as Gosnell’s trial gets underway, the only coverage to be found is either in local media The testimony of an employee who said she was freaked out to hear a baby screaming is not compelling or relevant to any discussion currently going on in the country.

Gosnell not as rare as we think?

Reading in the link that they saved Sundays for the latest term abortions possible, when their abortion business was otherwise officially closed just strikes me as utterly demonic. It’s so hard to stomach these accounts and yet as you allude in your links, I am sure there are many more Kermit Gosnells around the country and around the world.

For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

    Come Lord Jesus-ASAP!

Such tragedy will not go unpunished when the time comes but since I am at a loss for words, I am praying for the grace to understand why this horrible practice is allowed and goes on.

I know the politics of abortion is the main reason the press won’t perform their Constitutional duty and report this. But I suspect another reason is the racial component. This “clinic” was in a poor African American neighborhood, can’t have the reporters report on the alarming and disturbing statistic of how many black women choose abortion.

    @Fiestamom,

It’s both. Plus, we also can’t have the light shine on the abysmal conditions of the joint and how abortion “clinics” are less regulated than your local nail salon. Seriously, there is more regulation and oversight on the conditions and procedures at the local vet’s office than there is at one of these places. The government cares more about Fido’s health than that of the women and children who go into these places for “treatment.”

Oh my goodness. Makes me sick to my stomach. Like a blow to the gut, even.

The Manny (not me) above makes a great point. Kudos for that comparison.

The Gosnell story just turns my stomach too. It’s very hard to read. If there is anything that is aboslute evil, this is it. To paraphrase a Wallace Stevens poetic line, there are just too many mirrors reflecting misery.

This story should be on every station and in every paper. That said, the sensationalist Life Site News coverage does no one any favors. The story is sensational enough — and as the only outlet really covering it, they should be making every effort to be as matter-of-fact as they can. I can’t forward those stories to anyone — their tone makes it sound as if they might be making things up or exaggerating. I’ve read the Grand Jury findings, so I know they’re not. But most people (no thanks to the media!!!) don’t know anyhing bout this case and lot of peopel reading these stories would dismiss them because of the source and, if not that, because of the tone.

Well, at least the main Philly paper is covering it. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/local/20130409_Former_Gosnell_employee_testifies_that_problem_abortion__quot_really_freaked_me_out_quot_.html

I don’t live in Philadephia anymore, so I obivously can’t watch their news stations. Are there any Philly locals who’ve seen it on the local broadcast news or heard about it on KYW?

You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know. My bones are not hidden from you, When I was being made in secret, fashioned in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me unformed; in your book all are written down; my days were shaped, before one came to be. – Psalm 139:13-16
