A Study in Contrasts

Two Polish men. Both artists. Both "brilliant."Both persecuted by Nazis, in their native land. One was a prisoner, one was a slave. When the Nazis left, the Communists came. One, Roman Polanski, becomes a filmmaker. He encounters a 13 year old girl. One, Karol Wojtyla, becomes a priest. He too, encounters a 13 year old girl. After his encounter, the filmmaker -still a youngish man- runs away, out into the world, saying "everyone wants to do what I did." He lives what is for the most … [Read more...]

“That is God’s Milk…”

shutterstock gods milk

I am currently reading Orthodox Archbishop Anthony Bloom's Beginning to Pray. It's a fascinating little book with so many valuable nuggets on each page that it's hard to excerpt, but today being Yom Kippur, I thought I'd share this with you:In the life of Moses, in Hebrew folklore, there is a remarkable passage. Moses finds a shepherd in the desert. He spends the day with the shepherd and helps him to milk his ewes, and at the end of the day he sees that the shepherd puts the best milk he … [Read more...]

Getting to know Timothy Dolan

“True freedom is the liberty to do whatever we ought, not the freedom to do whatever we want; we are at our best when we give away freely what’s most inside of us.” --Archbishop Timothy Dolan, (RC-NY)A long and well-worth reading profile of NY's new archbishop, in New York Magazine, where the subtitle declares: If anyone can repair the church’s image, it’s Timothy Dolan. Except there are only so many nice ways to say no.For some people, that's all the Catholic Church is, a big bunch of "no." … [Read more...]

Can't believe Sally missed this…

Over at Icons and Curiosities, Sally and Jody like to showcase the different, new, oddball or kitschy. I am surprised that Sally, who regularly looks at Catholic Goods on Ebay has missed this one:For the Little Catholic Boy who likes to play "Priest at Mass"Ornate lot of 8 very old miniature religious church vessels in silver color pewter lead castmetal that were most probably used as toys in the late 1800's to the early 1900's.2 - Church altar spike candleholders 4,2 inches high. 1 - … [Read more...]

Vocations updates

Nun News Network International Logo by reader Brian JCall this an addendum to my nun news roundup of a few weeks ago - a few loose ends.I've often mentioned that the religious communities who have embraced the internet are the ones scoring the highest number of vocations. Now Deacon Greg (does a day go by that I do not link to him?) has this interesting piece on the subject, via John Allen. The Dominican Men of St. Joseph Province have a crowd of guys starting the life. The Salesian Men … [Read more...]

"O Eve" author passes

Some may recall the beautiful image of Eve and the pregnant Mary which illustrated a poem I shared here. The author of the poem, a gifted Cistercian nun named Sr. Columba Guare, has reached her culmination and now understands much more than the rest of us currently can. RIP, Sr. Columba. … [Read more...]

I lit a candle for all of you…

After reading about this over at Deacon Greg's, I lit a candle for all of you folks who come here every day in all sorts of moods, in all sorts of circumstances. The scoop:A Catholic church is allowing worshippers to light candles in memory of their loved ones over the internet as it seeks to reach out to a broader community. The church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis di Ostia, 20 miles from the Vatican offers the novel scheme through its website.Father Don Ludovico Barbangelo, the church’s p … [Read more...]

Clearing out the tab

I've got some deadlines to meet and a project I'd like to get started, so I need to stop futzing around, reading news and blogs and get to it. Here is what's been cluttering up my tab-bar for the last day or so - it's a bit of a jumble, sorry:Malta, shamelessly cribbed from CrescatBeautiful Malta! Where Doug Kmiec is the new US Ambassador after what Dan Gilgoff describes as a "strange religious/political" swearing in. Kmiec is the Catholic former Reagan WH Legal Counsel who campaigned … [Read more...]

Feast of St. Gregory the Great – UPDATED

The Dominican Nuns of Summit, NJ, (the great soap and hand creme nuns and best lipbalm evah) announce the arrival of another new postulant into their growing novitiate. Although Sr. Janlyn arrived to their house on the feastday of St. Dominic, they've announced her today, on the Feast of St. Gregory the Great. This seems fitting, actually, since their new postulant is a trained vocalist who will add much to the nun's daily chanting.Since we credit St. Gregory the Great with the Gregorian … [Read more...]
