This gives me hope – UPDATED

I can't say why, exactly, but all of this gives me hope.Clearly, thirty years of access to home video has made everyone pretty comfortable before the cameras. Until now--thanks to Reality TV, I was thinking of that as a net-negative. I am rethinking my position. A society that can handle its devolution with a bit of humor and artistic entrepreneurship gives me hope. You may feel differently. Watch the videos in order:Antoine Dodson, charismatic and with a delivery that lends itself … [Read more...]

Obama Refuses Perry's Letter

What kind of president is this? All hat, no cattleGov. Rick Perry's meeting at the Austin airport with President Barack Obama on border security lasted a mere 34 seconds, and Perry had to hand a letter on the issue to presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett because Obama declined to personally accept it.That did not dissuade the governor from inviting Obama to come back to Texas and tour the border with him to get a first hand look at what Perry describes as the threat from Mexican drug … [Read more...]

The Elite Magic Circle – UPDATED

Check out Michael Liccione's latest on the falling of the Catholic Church from the magic circle of the elite.Whatever the ideological coloration, if any, of a magic circle might be, just being part of a magic circle is usually bad for peoples' souls. It constitutes a culture of privilege that insulates them from the worst criticisms, causes them to think themselves better than others, and makes them resistant to reforms, the need for which is obvious to many outsiders. That sort of problem … [Read more...]

UPDATE: I have written an expanded version of these rosary meditations for OSV; you can order pamphlets of it for your church or group, hereReading about these especially horrific numbers and the endless squeezing of the Middle Class, and watching my son--still trying to find a real, full-time job now that the temporary one has ended--brought prayer.Prayer has power. Ken Howell Update

The other day I wrote of the firing of U of I's Ken Howell, who had taught “Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought“ and other courses on Catholic doctrine, understanding and reason:The Howell story, however, goes beyond grim: it tells us that a simple charge of thinking incorrect thoughts and encouraging others to also dare to think, even if one comes to a different conclusion (“All I ask as your teacher is that you approach these questions as a thinking adult . . .All I encou … [Read more...]

Journolist: Listening So You Don't Have To!

Git along little dawgiesOver at RCP Jay Cost is asking what's so bad about journolisters? It's a good piece, and I urge you to read it, but here's what I think:Journolisters discourage listening among their readers and the general public, and if people are not listening, they are not thinking, either; they're just following the moo-path, which appears to suit the journolisters just fine, since it is the one they're forging. When Jeremiah Wright's America-damning, race-tainted rants were … [Read more...]

Echoing Love in Eternity

This morning I dreamed my dog was being sick in my bedroom--she sleeps by my bed--turns out, my husband had said, "she's throwing up, again" it and the words invaded my dreams before they entered my consciousness. I awoke to find him taking the first turn at what became a bad morning/afternoon of cleaning up after Alle, who seems to be a little more settled now, and is able to take some hydration. The vet says tomorrow, we'll know more. Meanwhile, I think my husband is bringing home a … [Read more...]

Sherrod should write a book- UPDATED

The Pool of Bethesda, 1645, Joost Cornelisz DroochslootShirley Sherrod says she is not certain that she would accept a reinstatement to her office even if the USDA offers it to her.I think she should not. This woman needs to write a book. Politics aside, (and Sherrod may have had a little time to reconsider her absorption of the NAACP's message that tea parties = racists) her personal story is gripping, poignant and wholesome - a staggering snapshot of where America was 50 years ago, … [Read more...]

The Breitbart Sherrod Tape – UPDATE

Glenn Reynolds linked to this piece at Hot Air where Ed Morrissey writes:Andrew Breitbart announced that he would publish at least one video of the NAACP itself cheering racism. Breitbart delivers on that promise today at Big Government, showing USDA official Shirley Sherrod explain to an appreciative NAACP audience in July 2009 how she deliberately withheld information from a white farmer in Georgia trying to save his land and his business:The Breitbart piece is here, and yes, the … [Read more...]

The Vatican's Epic Fail – UPDATE

Oh, for crying out loud!See hereand hereand hereand hereand hereHonestly, do I have to go to Rome and storm the press office of the Holy See, and sit the curia down and pull their hats off to smack them upside the head? Must I bang on their desks and say:"stupido! Stupido! PR IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE! On the rare occasion where you've done something that will bring you a cautious measure of good will, or at least less-hostile reportage, you don't tie it in with a controversial issue … [Read more...]
