Bristol Pregnant; watch "tolerant" & "intolerant"

So, Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, age 17, is pregnant, and wants to marry the father of the baby. The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.Hey, since Trig is only four months old, and Bristol is five months pregnant I guess the KosKidz can finally put the "it might still be a pregnancy … [Read more...]

Sew the Scarlet A for Sarah Palin! – UPDATED

Palin in March, "wearing her pregnancy suit"You know, my instinct is to not even address this crazy stuff, to just ignore it. But it's "out there," buzzing, so, I may as well jump in.The doyens of uterine politics have decided that what matters about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is not her politics, not her policies, but her periods.Like some old, suspicious grandmother from the middle part of the twentieth-century, Alan Colmes counted back on his fingers and decided that - not that it's … [Read more...]

Palin: Bad Mother, Bad Woman

What in the world has happened to liberal/Democrat values in the last 48 hours? It seems like the appearance of Sarah Palin on the GOP ticket has caused an immediate disintegration of all of the hard-fast rules and values that have been preached at us 'lo these many years.Palin was not a half hour in the ring, when a male reporter wondered, "Shouldn't she be home raising" that Down Syndrome baby. He needed to be reminded by a female reporter that a male politician would not be asked that … [Read more...]

Obama, McCain, Palin & generosity

When I hosted the online retreat a few weeks ago, we pondered - a lot - the idea of not getting in our own way, not disrupting the trajectories of our lives by insisting on our own ways, or complicating things with our own insecurities and neurosis. We also talked about the mysterious value of sacrifice and generosity. In watching the coverage of John McCain's choice of Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, I thought about generosity and the lack thereof and how they play out, and what sort of … [Read more...]

St. Monica, meet Nancy Pelosi

St. Monica by John Nava, cribbed from the DeacToday is the Feast Day of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine who prayed for years and years that he would accept Jesus Christ and enter the church - which he finally did, and in a big way, because Augustine did everything big.If it seems like you're hearing Augustine's name a lot, lately, it may be because Nancy Pelosi has been throwing it around as she uses his musings about the ensoulment of a fetus to reconcile her voting record on … [Read more...]

Pelosi to Bishops: drill your brains?

Wait, that can't be right. Nancy Pelosi cannot have respond to the rather heavy dose of correction she received from various and sundry Bishops and Cardinals, some of her colleagues in Congress and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops with an offer to drill their brains, right?Oh, wait! I see! She asked some of the "Drill here, drill now" people chanting in Colorado if she could drill their brains. Which seems like a strange remark - what does it mean, actually? Is she saying these … [Read more...]

Pelosi, Abortion & St. Augustine – UPDATED

I was just out driving, had the radio on and heard this Meet the Press sound bite by Nancy Pelosi, on Limbaugh's show:REP. PELOSI: I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition. And Senator–St. Augustine said at three months. We don’t know. The point is, is that it shouldn’t have an impact on the woman’s right to choose. Ro … [Read more...]

Fallout from Retreat & Other Stuff

It has been a very interesting week since the online retreat; I'm still dwelling desert-side, but I've managed a peek at Drudge and a perusal of Instapundit.com. My interest in the political is still way diminished, but not totally lost.I sense within myself not so much a broad change of perspective but rather the installation of a new window, to let in a bit more fresh air, so to speak. Whether that will blow me to pieces or simply refresh is anyone's guess.Strangest post-retreat … [Read more...]

The Power of One

Deacon Greg has a homily up for this Sunday that is a cut-and-a-half above his usual superb offering: This week, in the Boston Globe, I read the story of an elderly couple named Sol and Rita Rogers. They’ve been married 61 years. They’ve raised a family and lived a long and happy life together. A few years ago, that began to change. Rita developed Alzheimer’s. And she is slipping deeper and deeper into dementia.Several weeks ago, she was taken to a health care center, where she now has to live. … [Read more...]
