Sorry so quiet

Hey, the virus I seemed to pick up on our short vaca, and which has been dropping all of us in turn, has proved itself a clinging little monster, so it's quiet around here. Sorry about that. The good news is that - while I have not been able to record the audios I'd planned on (tomorrow is another day to try) the Online Retreat that I wrote about here will be going on as scheduled.Elder Son, photo by PopPopFrom sundown to sundown, August 10 through August 16, this site will be hosting an … [Read more...]

Linking around…

A 9 minute video is usually not my speed, but this one's clever and fast-moving.The light sabers and "Kentucky Fried Analogy" cracked me up. (H/T Bookworm, who features another - succinct and entertaining - vid by one of the players, here.) I don't know who this guy is, but he's smart, charismatic as hell, and has beautiful eyes and a great smile.Bookworm is also calling olly-olly-oxen-free to "secret conservatives" in Marin County and elsewhere. It's a sad thing, isn't it, when … [Read more...]

A Tale of Two Governors

Deacon Greg, who is - like Julie and Happy Catholic and Patrick at Paragraph Farmer - locked out of his blog at present because someone flagged him to google/blogger as a "spam" site, sent this piece by Michael Gerson and asked if I would link to it. I see why. It's pretty interesting.Call it a tale of two Democrat governors of similar background - both Catholic, both men who have spent time volunteering to work amid "the poorest of the poor." Their backgrounds are similar, but only one of … [Read more...]

Randy Pausch, Hero, RIP

Very sad to read that Randy Pausch, who used his illness to teach all of us how to live fuller, more meaningful lives, has passed away.In May, Dr. Pausch spoke at the Carnegie Mellon University commencement. He said a friend recently told him he was "beating the [Grim] Reaper" because it's now been nine months since his doctor told him he would die in six."But we don't beat the Reaper by living longer. We beat the Reaper by living well," said Dr. Pausch, who urged the graduates to find and … [Read more...]

Insomniac quick hits II

George W. Obama: Jim Geraghty identifies what would be an Obama Bushism, if such things were being observed and tallied:"You know, it's always a bad practice to say 'always' or 'never.'" — Obama, speaking in AmmanI know another:"Only a Sith speaks in absolutes."But I never could stay awake through that movie. Hot Air finds another. The verbal gaffes must be because Obama is tired. I can accept that; traveling knocks the crap out of me, and Obama really is "only human". But I can't h … [Read more...]

The Angel of the Lord appeared unto Mary…

A long, long time ago, in answering a question from a reader about why we Catholics make such fusses about things I wrote of Advent and the Incarnation:God kisses the earth, and nothing has been the same since...But no, maybe that’s not quite it, maybe God doesn’t just kiss the earth, for a kiss cannot last.Rather, God comes, as bridegroom - the real bridegroom who weds himself to us, divinity to humanity -and shares with us that most intimate privilege of marriage, the joining of two int … [Read more...]

Bill Clinton's other best legacy

Photo Credit: Michael TottenA while back I wrote a piece praising Bill Clinton for having the gumption to reform welfare and called it, "his best legacy."I wasn't exactly wrong. But I was ignorant of something excellent which goes unnoticed and should be added to Clinton's legacy. I know better now, thanks to Michael Totten, who spent a few weeks in Kosovo and filed this report: An Abominable Blood-Logged PlainStrange country, Kosovo. It’s European, but it isn’t Christian. It’s major … [Read more...]

Catholics, Abortion & Sen. Obama

:::Welcome, Hot Air readers, and thanks Ed. The piece Ed quoted from is here, at Pajamas Media!:::In my latest at Pajamas Media, I look at a recent Wall Street Journal piece exploring the means by which Catholics justify a vote for Barack Obama, whose NARAL rating (his recent musings on abortion notwithstanding) is 100%.The WSJ reports that the Obama Catholics justify voting for him in good conscience, despite his abortion record, because he is "so good on other issues" of import to … [Read more...]

Holy Eucharist & "Crackers" – UPDATED

Medal-Cross of St. BenedictIs it too much, really, to ask reporters to get it right? They always seem to write some variation of this:...he smuggled a Eucharist, a small bread wafer that to Catholics symbolic (sic) of the Body of Christ after a priest blesses it...No. We believe it is the Real Body and Blood of Christ, after consecration. Not a "symbol" after a "blessing." Is that so hard to get straight?Don't know how I missed this story, but I almost wish it had not been brought to … [Read more...]
