Summit says "Thank you"

Sr. Mary Catherine, OP in the renovated refectoryI know many Anchoress readers kindly made donations to the hugely necessary (and beautifully completed) renovations at the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Summit, New Jersey. The updated kitchen means the cabinets are no longer falling down as the sisters cook, the ramps and renovated refectory means the community can all eat together, again, and I believe the thriving soap-and-lotion business that helps to keeps them afloat can now … [Read more...]

A Plethora of Nun Pictures – UPDATED

Suspecting that only Carolina Cannonball is more fixated than I on all things nun-ish, I bring you something pretty extraordinary, via Kansas Catholic, four pages (count 'em, four) pages of pictures detailing the solemn professions of eleven Benedictines of Mary, in the Extraordinary Rite:As they are still forming, and in the process of building their monastery, the Benedictines of Mary are not strictly enclosed yet, but you still might call them "old school" Benedictines. Their day-to-day … [Read more...]

The New Celibates

How ironic that in a year where religious, and especially priestly, celibacy has been put under a microscope, debated and often excoriated, the secular hipsters in New York City are discovering the power that comes with celibacy:“I had man whiplash,” [Julia Allison] says. “I needed to put my neck in a brace.”She issued a proclamation, writing on her Web site last week, “I decided to codify my unofficial gut reaction of ‘I really don’t feel like dating’ into an official ‘No Dating, No Sex’ sta … [Read more...]

To Heaven with a Handbasket!

Maybe it's because this winter feels like it is never going to end, but I am already itching to get my hands into a little dirt, and so this great idea from the Summit Dominican Nuns is singing to me!Write the sisters:If you are a gardener you know how dirty, dry and cut your hands can get even if you are wearing gloves! And admit it, don’t you often prefer sinking your hands into the earth during planting season? This is actually a giant bone of contention between me and my husband. He w … [Read more...]

'In the midst of life, we are in death…"

And in the midst of death, we are in life.Over at Summit, NJ, the Dominican Nuns of Our Lady of the Rosary Monastery are in life and death, all the time. You can't spend your days processing in and out of choir seven times a day to join the Angels in adoration and praise, without getting a seriously wholistic view of it all. But this week, especially, we see the literal life-in-death paradox (which, really, is true in all our lives) at work. This past weekend saw the nuns celebrating the … [Read more...]
